How d'ya get the front sprocket off past the oiler???
« on: May 16, 2009, 06:46:56 PM »
Currently in the middle of replacing chain & both sprockets on a K3

Removed the 2 bolts holding the front sprocket carrier in place but carrier & sprocket won't clear the tongues holding the large center nut that the oiler screw sits in...

Do I have to pull that big nut to remove the sprocket??
If I do will the crank case drain out thru the oiler hole?  ???

Help!!

You'll have to "unlock" the tangs on the lockdown washer, then unscrew the big (17mm) nut. Make sure the bike's in gear: I didn't once, and dropped the bike on me (the bike didn't have a centerstand). That hurt.  :-\

The oil is only about 1/2" deep (I'm presuming a 750) in the pan, so a few drops may appear because of the little oil "catcher" tray inside, but that's about it for the drips.

Thanks HMan!!

Open tangs, remove central 17mm nut, watch for drips.

Can I leave the oiler screw in place?

Actually changing the oil was next on the to-do list...

Now, how do you get greasy fingerprints off the wife's keyboard?  ::)

Yep, the oiler screw need not change position. If you wish to play with it, out is more oil, in is less oil. I've forgotten what the standard setting was, but it used to cause jackets to grow black racing stripes up the back left shoulder, very fashionable.  ;D

The keyboard: I used acetone, because my wife is a touch typist: now, I can't find the letters on the keys...  :(
