CB550 Broken clutch adjusting screw.......
« on: May 16, 2009, 08:06:32 PM »
Well, I was attempting to fine tune the clutch on my 550 yesterday when I ran into a problem. I put some slack into the cable with the lever adjuster and the two nuts at the frame then I loosened the lock nut on the clutch cover. Inserted my flathead screw driver, attempted to turn and quickly heard two "snaps". The two pieces fell to the floor and I knew I was in trouble.

Questions:

The remaining part of the screw turns free but I'm baffled as to why they would snap off. Is this a common occurence on these bikes? I'm thinking no since I haven't been able to find one other instance on these forums with the search feature. Should I be concerned that this happened? I have been having a very difficult time adjusting my clutch properly  but when I took it apart before I had the bike running everything looked perfect inside the case including all of the actuator parts.

Also, am I relegated to finding this exact Honda part only? The part from Honda is available with the whole actuator arm which is about $40. It seems all I need is that double notched screw, anyone think I would be able to fabricate one with a stock screw with just a dremel?

I'm going to pull the cover off again to look inside and since I will have to anyway in order to repair this. I think I'm also going to pull the oil pan while I'm at it just to see what I find in there.

Also, a possibly unrelated second question. I noticed that when I enter a curve to the right and have the bike leaned over to the right I hear a metallic tinny noise coming from what seems to be the lower right side of the engine/trans. It sounds as if a bunch of metal discs are on some sort of shaft and slapping against each other. Almost like if you were to put some thin metal plates/discs on your wrist and shake your arm around. Any idea what this could be?

Thanks

RJ

Well, I just finished pulling the clutch cover and oil pan on the bike. What happened with the clutch was that I adjusted the screw so far "out" that the split end of it entered the cylindrical fitting and wedged itself tight. What I don't understand is why I was adjusting that screw so far out like that.

On the plus side, I pulled the oil pan and it was clean as a whistle. The pickup even looked great and was super clean. Looked up in the block and everything looked beautiful in there just as I hoped an engine with 3800 miles would look. If I could just get this clutch nonsense figured out.

Also, now that I've taken a look at that screw piece I will definitely need to purchase a replacement since I forgot that it has that stepped out part that keeps the screw from coming out of the cover. There is one advertised on Ebay for sale but it says that it's for a 75/76, wouldn't this also fit the 74?

Thanks again
