Some @$$! hit and ran me.
« on: June 04, 2009, 06:39:30 PM »
Just happened a few hours ago and I'm still a little ghost white. I've heard friends talk about wrecks they always say "it happened so fast" they weren't kidding. I was off the bike like a rag doll and back on my feet in what felt like 5 seconds.

If anyone interested. I was on my way home from a nice 120 mile give or take ride and taking the main road back home which is semi rural highway. I needed to make my turn off to head towards the house, the problem was somebody in a horrible looking 80's car was tailing me which was already getting on my nerves. So I give a warning brake, hand signal, and a turn signal way before the turn.

Slow down go to make the turn, but obviously they were to impatient to slow down with me and about half way through the turn, he/she hits the tail of my bike. I probably skidded about ten feet with the bike then flew off like a rag doll and rolled about 20 feet. I pounced to my feet like a cat and look up. This person didn't break, slow down, or stop, I just see them looking over there shoulder(kinda the "oh #$%*" look) and keep going (along with every car right behind her  >:( ).

I was trying to pick my bike up from the middle of the road and some guy trying to get on the highway pulls up to the stop sign stares at me (literally 5-10 feet from me) and just goes. I couldn't believe it. I was lucky enough that one motorcyclist drove by and stopped to lend me a hand. I ended up riding it home with a nasty gas/exhaust leak and crooked handle bars.

Thank god I had the proper equipment on since I currently don't have health insurance, thankfully I wasn't hurt(just road rash), but I'm extremely pissed about my bike. I love my bike.

Here's a couple pics, my turn signals are gone, head cracked near the 4th exhaust port, handlebar bent, brake lever, rear fender(have a replacement). The thing thats got me upset the most is my Mivv replica exhaust I was hunting for for a long time and scored on ebay is trashed (the right side) If anyone has any information on how I can get it fixed replaced w/e I'd be extremely grateful. Also If anyone has any of the parts that were destroyed I'd be glad to pay for them, I don't have much money since my jobs not going to well. But I'm not expecting hand outs either.

The exhaust has some nasty dents I don't know if you can see the difference between the gouges and dents in the picture though.

Anyways, thanks for reading I hope all of you guys/girls are safe out there.

WOW!!! I guess depending on your viewpoint you are either very luck or not!! I would say that all things considered you are very lucky.

I can't believe that no one stopped...not because they wouldn't help out (unless they are on 2 wheels they rarely do!) but rather because of the hit and run factor. You would think someone could take time out of their busy schedule to make sure you are ok and maybe catch a license plate or whatever.

I am a firm believer in Karma and fully expect that 80's car to meet with a heavier less movable object very soon!!

Glad to hear you could walk away...sorry I can't help with parts

I got some extra blinkers that were given to me when I bought my bike. I don't know if they work or not. I can send them to you on my next pay day (15th) if you want.

Damn, dude, I'm sorry about the way people treated you.  You're lucky to come out of it the way you did, though.  Can't believe people looked at you and didn't bother to help.  I *know* I'd be in a tough spot trying to get my bike righted if it went over, especially if I was hurt.

'fraid I can't help you much with parts or anything, but my suggestion on your exhaust- if you can't fix the dings etc, just keep touching it up with Nev-r-dull... it'll at least keep the rust to a minimum.

maybe try looking up health insurance for yourself, just a basic sort.  It's not usually horribly expensive, especially if you're young.  Bike damage you can piece together here and there, but when *you* are hurt badly, that will bankrupt you for a very long time.

@my78k: Thanks for the laugh, I like your Karma payment idea. Honestly I hope their car breaks down in the middle of no where and no one stops and they get severely sun burned on the walk to the nearest gas station. I don't know about meeting something like a wall though :p No worries about the parts, if you don't have um you don't have um.

@Keiths: I was thinking the same thing when I got back to the house and had a little time to go over it, I tried to think about how it could be my fault and what I could have done different. I wish I could have done something different, I came to the same conclusion there was nothing I could do unless I specifically knew I was going to get hit, in which case I would have just kept riding all the way till the person that hit me turned off (I know unrealistic). It's almost scarier knowing sometimes you can't do anything about it. Just glad she hit my fender instead of my leg(now that would have sucked!)

@CB650 Wolf: That would be great! If you have some extra blinkers you don't need I'd be glad to pay for them and if anything pay for shipping. Please give me a PM whenever you can.

Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you weren't injured.

I was in a side rear tire hit accident when I was 17.  Spun up in the air like a tornado. I was lying in the middle of the road with no shoes, my pants around my knees and a cracked helmet, and people actually drove past very slowly and peered out their windows at me. I couldn't move, all the ligaments in my right knee had exploded ::)  This was in my neighborhood !!!!!!!!!!!!

Fucin losers............ lucky for me a buddy was driving by and drove me to the hospital for an over night visit

anything is fixable... Just glad YOU did not suffer any injury...

I do not have parts for that year bike.  Most stuff I have is for a 80's CBF  :(

Did you say the head was cracked?  You mean the engine head?

@seaweb: Thats horrible!, I was thinking that might actually be the worse part. No one cares for the most part, when I was trying to get my bike off the street a solid 20 cars swerved around me like I was some detour cone. People peer out of there windows when they go past some horses or cows, not wrecks. Glad to hear you alright now.

@bender: Yeah I know, thats probably the part that feels the worst, but I don't want to get to down. Not feeling to positive as is right now.

@tramp: I was hoping that the person behind them might have tailed um and grabbed the plate number. If so I guess I could get a welcome visit from the cops. Don't know how likely that would be though.

@razor: I hope I can fix the head (yes engine head sorry about the confusion  :P ), I've seen the heads on ebay before but they're fairly rare. No worries on the parts.

Update: Feeling pretty crappy about the accident, and a little whiplashed after the adrenaline went away. I realized I must have been crazy pumped with adrenaline, I'm not a big guy but I picked that bike up like it was nothing and ended up pushing it with a locked up back wheel (couldn't get it in neutral) to the side of the road. Oh one other part I forgot to mention is the right headlight ear. Also if you have any idea on how I can fix the mufflers (they're stainless steel no plating) please let me know. The only idea I've had so far is the pull the baffle and try to tap it as close to round again. Maybe even use a cone wedge to help?

God I hope I am able to raise my kids to be more considerate than the arse who hit you.
The "awwww that looks like it hurts, so lets slow down and look, but i'm not going to help" attitude I hate.

It doesn't surprise me (sadly enough) that no one stopped to help you though.
I have helped a few riders out this year that have fallen.
2 in a ditch with baggers(what a surprise, both were HD's one was a lawyer, and the other owner was a dentist), and one a kid on a dirtbike(he was pinned under it).
I felt sorry for the kid, he was like 9 or 10 and in pain.

I just hope that one day (god forbid it happens) if I ever get hit/stuck/hurt someone would help me out.

Is that a 550?
Mabey you could transplant a 650 head and cam onto it?
Give you a slightly lower compression, but I think the 650 cam would make up for the difference.
Then you would need a 650 exhaust as well though.

Good luck!

Glad that is not you man.

Thanks guys, it's nice to see people I don't know (for the most part) that DO care  8) I appreciate all the well wishes.

@soos: It's actually a 1972 CB350F I got done restoring it over the last year and a half and just finished up this last winter. Maybe a CB400F head would work?, no dice on the CB650 head. Thank you though.

@caaveman82: That really sucks  :-[ , I know at least one guy thats died within the last week on a motorcycle. In that regard I couldn't be luckier. I actually got an offer for a couple turn signals from CB650 Wolf. I'm not sure what model they are but I think they are pretty much all identical. The ones I had on there where non stock 70's bullet style, If anything I can have some bullet signals in the rear and stock in the front might not look half bad actually. I'll let you know if wolf can't do it for any reason, but most likely I'm set on turn signals.

@soichiro: Thanks.

Quick Question: I'm going to start tearing the bike down. Does anyone know how to go about the front end? Do I need to take the triple tree all the way off to get those ears off? Still looking for idea's on the dented mufflers as well. Any of you guys with Mivv mufflers on your CB350F have any idea's how I could possibly replace just 3&4? Or know of a whole set for sale?

This forum is sure getting me mad today.
About 5 years ago, some wad was waiting at a stop sign, so I just kept moving.  I was in second gear on my '48 Indian so I was probably doing may 30mph.  When I get in front of him- he punches it.

Some friends found a piece of turn signal with a number on it and figured out what make and model.  They put some posters around and one of his neighbors turned him in for the reward.  Went to court and I got insurance money plus $5K.  Because I was in some kind of stainless cage to keep some bones together, I couldn't work- so the money came in mighty handy.

The bike became a bobber and I walk like a sailor on a ship at high sea.  Yet another reason why I don't own any guns.  Too many times I'da used one.

Oh yes- I'm quite serious about that.  There are plenty of people who don't really need to be here, IMO.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

I would have reported the hit and run AND I would be writing/calling my local "call and Comment" section of the local newspaper.

I would suggest to people that it is a possibility that someone may have their license plates and their picture in this day and age of the camera phone.

I would bet that someone would come forward and tell you who it was.

I was involved in a car accident where the driver of the other vehicle ran a stop sign ran us off the road and put our car in a ditch.  The bottom of the ditch was concrete and the car hit hard.  People in the car were injured (serious injuries).  The truck that hit us kept going.  I came back to the scene of the accident (after leaving the hospital), and put up a hand-made sign asking for people who witnessed the accident at that intersection on ?? whatever the date was.  You would be surprised to find that even though no one stopped to help us that day, that people came forward saying that they saw the accident.

You might be so lucky.

I wouldn't let such an incident go unrecorded.

If you write/call your local paper and tell them about the incident, this may raise awareness so that it does not happen to the next biker.

Glad to hear you are okay.

I actually filed a police report after the fact. I don't have a cell phone, if I would have had my head about myself I would have borrowed the motorcyclist cell phone that stopped. I've been involved in hit in runs in a car(car hit car) before and it's similar to what happened there. Basically the police at first weren't much help and said they couldn't do anything without a plate number but would file a report and wait for any tips. In that case a good bystander that saw the accident actually wrote the plate number down and reported it. Out of the blue I got a call a few weeks later and they actually found the guy. Big surprise he didn't have insurance but it was nice to know he was caught at least. I could have probably taken him to court but the car was already fixed and the damage wasn't more then $200. @Hope: I didn't even think of placing an ad. I don't know about the newspaper, but craigslist could turn something up if I'm lucky.

@Caaveman82: Just a heads up I sent you a PM.
.
I posted a more detailed wanted list here:

EDIT: I just realized my PM box was full if you PM'd me and I didn't get back to you please send another PM. Sorry about that.

Wow! Did that semi-truck driver lose his mind!!  :D

Quick question:
I'm talking to somebody on ebay right now and he wants me to make an offer on just a head. Does something like $35 shipped sound like a good deal? OR I could buy both the head/cam/valve cover for $60 shipped. I really only need a head..... but it might be worth the extra cash to have the extra parts around or help someone out around here. What do you think?
