charcoal or gas
« on: June 09, 2009, 04:15:43 PM »
So I wanted to ask you all. Personally, Charcoal is the way to go. I have had my Weber for about 10 years and last year bought a bigger "50 gallon drum" style grill. I used to have a gas grill, but it is not the same.

I use a chimney starter, never lighter fluid and I am cooking in about 35 minutes. I am trying some different things this year, maybe a beef brisket. Last year I did a few racks of ribs. Took me about 8 hours.

What say you?

I grew up in NYC so I have no patience. I went with gas since it starts faster. I got tired of getting those cylinders filled so I bought a natural gas grill and plumbed the grill into the house gas. I must admit I would prefer charcoal, So I have an old Weber which I use for cooking steak for parties.

100% Weber for 35 years now.  I just love the taste so much more.  Porterhouse, Angus patties and brats are the best on the Weber.  You just can not create that taste on the LP.  But...to each his own.  If you like your LP go for it.  It is a matter of taste I guess.

I dunno, I was designing a steam powered motorcycle, so could have used gas OR charcoal to run it, but gas would have been better. So I'll go with gas.

Oh, you mean BBQing... Charcoal, then.

Jeez, I guess I'm a "wussy" then... :P :P ;D

I prefer charcoal when somebody else is doing the grilling, because I definitely think it tastes better, but I use propane at home because it's much easier and cleaner.  When I had a charcoal grill it only got used a couple of times a year.  Now that we've had a propane grill it gets used at least a couple of times a month during the warmer season.

Charcoal in a kamado style grill (a big green egg).  Did gas for awhile.  Much prefer the flavor of charcoal.  Personally, I don't really get the gas is easier thoughts.  I go out and hit the charcoal with a propane torch or use a small square of firestarter.  By the time I go back in and get what I'm grilling ready, the grill is too.  And I can do low and slow brisket/pulled pork as well.

Personally, I don't really get the gas is easier thoughts.

It just is.

It takes literally five seconds to light my propane grill, and zero seconds for clean-up (because there is none).  It takes that long just to open the bag of charcoal.  I walk the half block to the U-haul place down the street once at the beginning of each Summer to get my tank filled, and that's it for the rest of the year.

I'm not saying that using charcoal is some huge pain in the ass, because it isn't, but I'm lazy whenever possible so a propane grill will get ten times as much use at my house than a charcoal one will.

i would prefer charcoal as far as taste goes but propane is so much more convenient especially if you are cooking on it 3 or 4 times a week and it still tastes pretty damn good
ive had many charcoal grills over the years and never used them near as much as my gas grill

Gas all the way.  We use our grill at least 4-5 times a week in the summer at at least 2 times a week in the winter.  Lately we have been using it to cook home made pizza.  For the amount of cooking we do and sometimes for only 10 minutes depending on what's on the grill  charcoal would be a PITA.  One of my favorite treats is grilled fresh sliced pineapple basted with a rum brown sugar sauce and some vanilla ice cream on the side.

gas. every single time i've attempted to use the charcoal grill i've set fires............not just the grill either. i once set the dry grass during a drought 2 summers ago, set a lawn mower aflame after i started the charcoal then went inside to get more beers, set the yard on fire last spring and also burned both apple trees and one of the fig trees (man was the wife PISSED OFF that time) gas is safer for me, and i've gotten pretty good on the grill.

I keep both. Charcoal to impress and gas to eat quick. Brisket had been eluding me but now ive found the way. My weber kettle RIP was left at Darlington a few years ago. It was a planned one way last hurrah. I miss that one but now have a grocery store barrel that is a good piece. Brisket. Get good color and smoke on it and finish in a pan covered with foil slowly in a little liquid of your choice till tender as mothers love. Similar to braising.  We too have been grilling pizzas and the veggies to go on them. Gas is the way to go here. So i guess for cooking, gas.  BBQ = charcoal. Answer is you should have both.

Gas, all the way.  Next one will be natural gas.  Quicker, easier, and when it's only me and I want to do hot dog for lunch, done.

Although, I have been known to use wood in the fire pit to cook the hot dogs, but it usually because I already have the fire going.

your post mentioning the fire pit just made me laugh so hard i spilled my milk :D this past winter, we were burning a bunch of old paperwork that wasnt safe to just throw out, and was just way way too much to shred. well i grabbed a big handfull of brass shell casings from my .300 winmag deer rifle, made really sure my wife saw just that i ad a hanfull of what she thought was ammo (i held the open ends in the palm of my hand so she couldnt see that these were spent casings) i walked right past her and threw em into the fire then casually walked away. let me tell to, i never thought i'd see her move so damn fast, i literally rolled on the ground laughing. for some reason, she didnt think it was that funny  :D

she DID learn not to yell at and constantly correct me in front of company and friends though  ;D

Charcoal will always give better flavor, I doubt anyone disputes that. I think ease of use is what sets the 2 apart. Would I like a charcoal grill, sure but the clean up is a pain and the disposal of ashes is a pain too. However, you can get gas grills I think that allow the use of hickory and other woods without quite all the clean up.

I just realized by using natural Gas I am being more EARTH FRIENDLY. No vast tracts of land are being clear cut so that I may enjoy my dead Cow. Less carbon is emitted during the cooking process. I am giving myself a Gold Star for havig a social conscience.  ;D

Well, for me, I do not mind the clean-up nor the time it takes to prepare and cook the meal.  I have started to use larger wood briquets that burn hotter so I use those infrequently and stick with Kingsford. Is it possible to barbeque or slow cook (indirect heat) on a gas grill? The burners are fixed so I don't know how you would do it. With indirect cooking you can just move the coals to the side and put a drip pan with some water in it and then replace the coals about every 45minutes. The ash goes in my garden and turned over.

Well I dont know if gas grill companies like it but I have a 6 burner monster and If I want lower heat, I just shut off a couple burners. So yes, you can have indirect heat.

I think you need to stick to the easy-bake oven, Fuzzy. :o ;D  Although from the sound of it you'd find a way to burn the house down with that, too! ;D ;D
