Dear diary,

I think the heat is sapping my creativity. I've decided after tring to shoot my test panel with some spiffy designs that I will just spray everything the same color (ie the tank, fenders, etc) It is a lot more complicated, and in all honesty more work than I want to put into it. Guess I won't have the most pimped out bike on the block, but can still guarantee I'm the one who has wrenched on theirs the most :D

I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Ouch, and this coming from the guy who can't put rubber boots on so they are air tight  :P

Seriously though, I'm trying to remember where I put some of those long bolts that hold the engine in and the ones for up front  :( I wanted to replace them with stainless anyhow, hopefully Bikebandits fiche give the dimensions I need.

Ok, found the bolts so thats a savings. I started taking apart my front brake MC so I could sandblast and paint it and it's looking like it's in major need of a rebuild... damn. I'm almost afraid to touch the caliper and see what lovely condition it is in. The hose should probably be replaced, but I'm gonna hold off on that for this riding season. It's in good enough condition and then I'll get some braided lines. Also ruined the carb isolators when I pulled them off yesterday, they were so old that they just cracked horribly, there was no give in them. The shiney lining here is I think the donor bike's boots are in good shape, they were pretty pliable when I checked them. So hopefully they'll work and that'll be an $80 savings. If I am ever allowed to do this again, I'll definately be going about the build differently.

I dropped the oil pan and cleaned it out and the screen was already pretty gunk free so it's looking good. Took the oil pump off and checked it out and it looks nice and clean and shiney, so I think I'm ok there.

You are lucky to have a spare set of carb isolators, mine were like yours so cracked they let air in.
Luckily I got a nice set off Soos, shame I fitted them wrong. :D

Hah, luck has nothing to do with it, I had to buy another frame, and the engine came with it  ;) Anyhow, haven't pulled them yet, gonna try today, wish me luck. Sure wish the bike would stop making me buy stuff, it's nickle and dimeing me to death!

Well crap, tried pulling the isolators of the parts bike, and all but 1 were just as far gone as the others! I'm cringing at the idea of $80 for those, and I haven't even fully worked the carbs yet. I sure hope they are in decent shape.

Didn't get the engine in like I had hoped as I found out I had forgotten to paint some of the small brackets that you have to have. Unfortunately it was so stinking windy today that I pretty much threw the towel in until later this evening when the wind died down a little bit. I sandblasted the little brackets and a bunch of the aluminum stuff as well as my fork lowers. The sand has been used so much it didn't damage the aluminum, but the aluminim will take paint nicely now. I even stripped my caliper and MC apart, taped up anything I didn't want the sand to work on and blasted them. I'll be painting them as well.

I was able to get the piston out of the MC, the inside was rusted decently, but the outside was very shiney except for some very small pits. I'm trying to decide if they are bad enough to warrant a new piston or not.

Hopefully the weather will be reasonable tomorrow and I'll paint all these parts, let em dry over night and then finally get the engine back into the frame and start reassembling it. I really want a big garage or workshop when I buy a house, with AC and a heater. Gotta have dreams  ;)

The one I took apart on my 450 had a tiny pit in it that I filled with JB Weld.  Spackle it in like drywall mud and sand very very lightly after it dries.  No leaks afterward.  Beats spending the $$ for a new piston.

O&R I think it must have been your post I was thinking of when I saw the pits. Which type of JB weld did you use, was it that stick that you squish together, or the epoxy in two tubes you mix? The pits are minor enough I really think I could get away with this and ride with peace of mind.

O&R I think it must have been your post I was thinking of when I saw the pits. Which type of JB weld did you use, was it that stick that you squish together, or the epoxy in two tubes you mix? The pits are minor enough I really think I could get away with this and ride with peace of mind.

Ok, well I'll tear the other brake caliper apart and see what condition it is in and then use the best of the two. I need to tear it apart if for no other reason than to get the brake fluid out of there.

I've just shot the primer and base color on the brake caliper, mc, and a bunch of other parts, and am just waiting for a bit to do the clear. With luck tomorrow I will be putting the engine in the frame and starting to put things back on. I got the driver and passenger pegs reassembled and they look pretty good. I'll post pics of stuff tomorrow. Next week I'm gonna spend a few hours sourcing parts to do a blade style (ato?) fuse box for these bikes. Unfortunately since the fuse box is where it is in the handle area, they won't fit there so I'm gonna make it with long enough wires to reach behind the left side panel. I'm hoping there is room in there once everything goes back together. Guess I could dig up some of my pics of that area and see. I'm also offering to do one for anyone who wants one, I'm not really looking to make a bunch on them, just enough to pay for supplies a bit to the forum, and a few sodas. Once I get mine done, anyone who is interested in one, let me know. If I get enough interest I might start making them for other models as well, but for now I am just looking to help our poor forgotten 650s.

Urethane paint is supposed to be pretty bullet proof, so in a way this is something of an experiment. It can't be any more suseptable than the old enamel or whatever was on there. But I will be careful never the less.

Engine is now back in the frame, sans some of the bolts  >:(  Somehow I didn't label things as I pulled them so I'm missing hardware, go figure. Thats ok, I was looking for an excuse to buy new nuts and bolts anyhow. Wish I knew where I could find good grade 8 stainless ones as the place I go doesn't always have them. Guess I'll be sourcing those on tuesday as well.

Pics will be posted on Tuesday, as monday is my birthday and the wife wants to go out to dinner  :) Personally I'd rather work on the bike, but since she is always so good about all the time I spend on it, I can't really complain when she wants to do something like this.

I would go with nickle coated hardware.  I have not seen grade 8 stainless bolts.  If you could find them they would be expensive.

Thats an option I hadn't thought of, wonder if I can find a local supplier with it all in stock. I just don't want galvanized or zinc coated, mostly for aesthetic reasons. I don't know much about bolts and such, just know grade 8 is among the strongest.

I posted a request in the Manuals sticky and someone directed me to a site with a really nice fiche setup. I took the list down to the local nuts and bolts place said here is the list these are how many I need, and somehow the "customer service" rep behind the counter shorted the heck out of what I needed. So I just ordered them online, hopefully get them beginning of next week. Bummer of it is they aren't flange bolts, but I'll just replace the "flange" with a washer. I'll have to give them a quick spray with some paint since they are just steel, couldn't find any stainless or even decent zinc ones in the hardness I wanted. Oh well, next time I'll learn not to lose the stupid boogers.

Aw that sucks Brandon... You could see if you can find a good plater you can send the hardware and get nickle.  You wouldn't want zinc anyway it can make some kind of nasty crud when exposed to the road then it rusts  :-\  Another advantage when plating you own hardware you can "modify" however you want.  Welding on thicker washers or tapping to a different size  (which would ruin a coating otherwise) etc. etc.

Hmmmm, thats a good point, I might just do that. Seems to me there was a member on here that was looking to get into nickel plating, might just pm him and see what he'd charge. I just don't care for the idea of painting all the hardware.
