It is my opinion that most of Christ's messages were ones of peace, non violence, helping each other out, and love. I seem to remember something about loving your enemies, turning the other cheek, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, etc, etc. In my opinion, the problem is that most of Christian doctrine and practice is based on Paul's writings, not on Christ's. And Paul was an a-one #$%*. Additionally, since Constantine made Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire lo these 1700 years ago, the religion has been intrinsically connected to political and cultural power. And as they say, absolute power corrupts absolutely. So the problem lies not with the religion per se, but with the followers of the religion.
The other problem is that neither the Bible, nor Christ say anything clearly, so the text can be shaped to fit whatever ideology the reader brings to it.
