Valve Adjustment
« on: June 27, 2009, 07:35:44 PM »
Howdy,

I've been riding my 1980 CB650 a lot with good results.  One thing i have yet to do is adjust the valves.  In the Clymer manual it says i need a special tool for this....anyone know if this is really necessary?  I have no idea where to even buy it, and would love to see if i can get by w/o it?

Thanks!

You need a feeler gauges one for intake and one for exhaust check the clearances in the manual the tool you are talking about is a tappet adjustment tool but you can do it with a socket wrench and a flat screw driver ( it's harder) but it can be done.

I think you can use a set of pliers to do the job. A least that's all I've ever used, unless it's slotted, then a slotted screwdriver will do.

A member on here posted somewhere about using a roll key to fit over the the adjuster bolt and that works well too.

If you want the tool, they are still available from Parts Unlimited.  A local dealer should be able to get it for you.

I don't know how yours is set up, but on my 550 I've used regular feeler gauges that can be purchased at any automotive parts store. I had to bend the ends of the feeler gauges so that they'd fit.  Remember after you've set the clearance, you need to slide the next size up feeler gauge in to test your work. If the next size up doesn't fit, you've set the clearance right.  Checking your work will greatly reduce engine backfiring...trust me.

The only other tools I use are a socket wrench to get the cover off, and a wrench and screwdriver to set the clearances. Make sure the screwdriver fits tight in the slot as well.

These are all tips I've gotten from this forum by the way, and they all worked great for me.

I use these feeler guages

Another tip:  When taking off the tappet covers, use a 6-point wrench/socket.  The covers are soft aluminum alloy and a 12-point could easily round the hex head.  I learned this the hard way!

If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.
