clutch wont engage
« on: July 03, 2009, 11:07:26 AM »
hey guys hope you can help. i have read all kinds of pages on here about clutch problems and adjusting but i am not able to put the bike in gear. pull the clutch and the arm attached to the cable goes in so it seems like the balls are riding up the little ramps but when released with the engine on wheel does not spin. tried adjusting like the manual says. one thing i noticed is that if i turn the screw in until i feel resistance and then out 1/4 turn there is not enough thread to put the nut on??? any ideas

Did you recenyl have it apart? Did the bike come with the clutch like this and you are just trying to get it running? Did the previous owner take it apart then then find himself unable to get the bike running? A little history, please.

just recently bought it. PO said it had a cracked clutch cover so i replaced that per clymer manual and adjusted. i think it had sat for a while and was not running when i got it. he didnt know much about it because he got it from an estate sale and had not done anything but look it over.  been working on the engine, carbs, brakes, lights ect. recently and got all that goin. was hoping to take it for a ride soon and found this

so you replaced the cover and touched none of the other components? if so, something must be missing in the assembly. is the bearing pressure plate missing maybe? got any pictures?

I had this same kind of problem. Turned out I hadn't tightened down the nut securing the pressure plates enough. Maybe the same on yours?

ok so i pulled the clutch cover off again and something else that struck me as odd is a spring that came out was sitting directly behind the clutch release shaft(part 11) and around the back of the adjusting bolt and actually sits on the race(part 19) right on the balls(bearings)? does that seam right man i wish i knew if all the parts were here or what sorry no pics no camera right now

BTW, this is a 750? The diagram above is from a 750. I'm guessing they're pretty much the same for the 550s etc but you never know (or I don't  ;D ).

Hmmm, it was in the center of the hub? below the locking nut?

No, not right at all. The four springs fit on the spindles of part 5 and the pressure plate is screwed into them. Unless this is some way different model than a 750.

Part 11 is a washer in this diagram. Probably better confirm your bikes model.

deffinately 750K4. i was looking at a couple different diagrams when i wrote that sorry for the confusion. according to the diagram above: spring was behind clutch release shaft around adjusting bolt sits on part 14(above pic) thats what bothered me there are only four in the diagram and i have those four on the spindles. so whats this one that just fell out when i removed the clutch cover. i am starting to get the feeling someone else was in here before me.

How big was the spring? There's a small one on the outside of the cover... maybe this one got lost in there somewhere?

Put a penny between the gears on the outside edge of the clutch to keep it from turning. It should not take much to remove those bolts. Make sure you turn them out equally, only a turn of each bolt at a time, so you don't damage the lifter plate. All four bolts have to come out at the same time. I'm still thinking either you used the wrong clutch cover, didn't get it seated correctly when you installed it, or the PO (previous owner) did something wrong when the clutch was last assembled.

Look here for a possible cause of your problem, at the very least something to check:
