When did everyone become a butthole?
« on: July 03, 2009, 01:18:08 PM »
This is only my second season of riding but one of the coolest things about motorcycle culture is the wave. It really shows off the brotherhood of our lifestyle. I always initiate a wave if I'm not in the middle of clutching or tucked in running all out. But this year  I'm probably only getting about half of the people waving back. Now I understand not to expect one if someone is cornering or in the middle of traffic or something similar but come on 50%?!?!

My percentage is much higher with people on crotch rockets and bless them for it. My lowest percentage has to be with gray haired people on Harleys of course. This is getting kind of ridiculous, the wave should be on the motorcycle permit test. Im done venting for now.

When talking to people at cruise nights or shows it seems to be one of two reasons...

1. It just isn't cool anymore to have girls in a car watch you wave to someone else.

2. More an more people think that anything other than a Harley is crap and won't or don't want to give you the time of day.

Me personally I am the crazy guy who waves at everything on wheels. Cars with little kids in them, old people on their hover-rounds, even bicyclists get a high five a 60 mph.

Anything to let them know I appreciate them.  :D

I almost never get the wave back when I wave to a group.  Doesn't matter what they're riding, if there's 3 or more bikes, they're too cool to wave back.  This has happened to me by crotch rocketeers and Harley guys alike.

On the other hand, I had a Harley guy give me the coolest wave ever about two weeks ago.  After I waved, he brought both legs out in front of him, and both arms straight out to the side.  It made my day.

I get a kick out of kids at stop lights looking and waving.  I will give them a wave too.  I agree the crotch rockets like to wave a lot here in WI.  I generally initiate the wave no matter what the bike.  Most of the time I do not look to see if I get one back.  That way it does not bother me one way or another.  However, I do get a first wave from a number of HD here too.

I'm noticing that it's kind of a brotherhood thing having to do with the type bike you ride.
I get a lot more from the rocket guys since I got the cbr, almost always. Not all the cruiser people are bad tho. Maybe the proportion of "non wavers" is bigger with that group because there's more of them. You can't as they say, always judge the book by it's cover.
I've met cruiser guys who were absolutely awed by my 750. Some are just like us. Just hard to tell who they are sometimes. Of course, there are the jerks too, just like in all other areas of life. I almost never initiate a wave, and almost always return one. There's usually so many bikes going the opposite direction I can't wave at all of 'em. So I let them
initiate it 8)

One factor may be the number of bikes on the road.  I don't know about the OP's area, but around here there are more people out riding than I've ever seen.  Some days you would be in the continuous wave mode if you waved at everybody and it gets ridiculous.  A lot of people still wave, though.

A friend and I took a 21/2 week, 6000+ mile tour beginning the end of May.  We left Idaho, went through Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, Oklahoma, western Arkansas and Louisiana, through Texas, New Mexico again, Arizona, and back home through Utah.  We saw a lot of other people traveling by motorcycle.  Every motorcycle type was represented, and I'd say easily 95% waved.  Even the Harley riders, including the ones in groups.  I was on my CBR1000F and my friend on his PC, so if Harley riders were going to snub somebody, it would have been us.

So you may get fewer waves around town, but out on the open road, people are still waving.

As an aside, it seemed like there were more people touring on pure sportbikes this trip than I can remember seeing before.  Otherwise, Harley riders were the biggest group, followed by Goldwings, and a lot of BMW GS's and various other dual purpose bikes.

Last night I took a 100 mile ride with 20 bikes from an area dealership...not a Honda dealership.  The ride is open to all bikes whether you patronize the dealer or not.  Stopped for ice cream with the group.  I was not even able to get any ice cream as the guys wanted to talk about my ruby red KO.  They were just fantastic guys riding HD, Yami, Kaws, rockets, etc.  Heck, this KO was older than a lot of the guys.  Great group and they waved at everyone.

Everyone's to nervous to wave at me  :D so when I wave first they always wave back, kids get a huge kick out of the old Police bike, you can see them saying "Mum Mum that Policeman waved to me"! :)
I think I do a lot for the public image of the Traffic Police in our local area, unfortunately it also means I have to behave myself all the time as that would reflect badly on the cops. ;D
But it's really really funny to see the look on grizzelled gang members and bikers faces when what they obviously believe to be a cop gives them a cheery wave, I always get one back. ;D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

My lowest percentage has to be with gray haired people on Harleys of course.

With the Gray Hairs it might just be because they are concentrating on holding up that big ol' Harley and they are worried that if they let even one hand go they might lose control and drop it, lolol.

Become a butthole? Some people were BORN buttholes and only grow up to be 'roids.

I generally get waves back.  If I can't wave (busy w/ clutch or something) I nod, and find a lot of other riders do, too.

Newbies, that have spent most of their driving years in cages, are so worried about wether they should wave or not, so they dont..

They are too worried about looking like a dork, waving at the wrong person , that they wont..

But secretly, a lot of them WOULD LIKE TO WAVE. :o.. I mean like who EVER waved at them before.. ;)

I became one right after marriage.  Just ask the ex.    Really I get less waves from the crotch rocket crowd followed close by the "new"  hardly bunch.  But in the stupid places I ride I get waves from cagers too.

I can't help it, but this is an endless source of frustration for me. In the seventies when you met another rider it was usually a raised fist biker salute, and everyone did it, everyone, or else they only had one arm.

Nowadays I don't try to fiqure it out anymore, must be doctors & lawyers that can't see past the end of their own noses.  ;)

I spend a lot of time riding/driving around in the country, so everyone gets waved at and 95% of people wave back.  When I'm driving a car, it's usually simply raising your fingers off the steering wheel.  On my bike, it's the arm out under the handlebar.  I generally only wave to other bikers while I'm riding, but everyone gets a wave when I'm driving the car.  In town I only wave at other bikes.  Sometimes they wave back, sometimes they don't.  To be honest, I couldn't care less what they do, I'll wave anyway.

You mean only the white collar types, waller? There's plenty of buttholes around no matter where you look. And if someone doesn't wave, does that make them a butthole automatically? Raised fist sounds better than the wave, though. I wasn't around for that.

yeah I realized early on that riding is too consuming and intense to really focus an effort on waving to *every* biker I see.

Hmmm, I ride a Harley and I wave at everyone or, at the very least, give a nod if my clutch hand is busy. Maybe it's not the brand or type of bike, but the individual that is unfriendly. Nah, couldn't be...  ::) ;)

I've noticed that a LOT of the older guys who ride Harleys once rode Jap bikes at some point in their past.  If you engage them in conversation they have a tendency to come out with a "Yeah, I used to ride a such and such Jap bike when I was younger."

Even the guy at the Harley dealer was very friendly when I brought in my XS650 rim.  He immediately recognized it as an old Yamaha rim and told me about the fond memories of the XS650 he used to ride in highschool.

Can't always judge a rider by what he's riding  ;)

In the seventies when you met another rider it was usually a raised fist biker salute, and everyone did it, everyone, or else they only had one arm.

Possibly since the rise of the Black Power movement the raised fist has been frowned upon, the Black Power gangs here in NZ use it still and the Mongrel Mob (thick as) use the "hang lose in Hawaii" thumb and little finger raised salute, completely ruining a great greeting that used to mean friendship.
