I live in metro detroit, so abandoned buildings are abundant if I travel east into detroit. The Packard plant is huge, so is grand central station. However, there is an abandoned insane asylum/hospital just a little down the road from me. I'll go there at night, kinda scary, but fun. Also is the bell isle abandoned zoo. I'll post some pictures as soon as I find them.
That's what I'd like to hear.

Def looks like the area it was filmed in, those hills behind you are a dead give away.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

I have taken to riding with a camera because of this thread since it is actually my favorite.

I came across this Barn in Putnam next County which is still a bit more rural than mine. There is an open field behind it with some Cattle.

Scattered around the area are these stone structures which were until fairly recently considered to be root cellars built by the original settlers. They are now under serious study since journals kept by the original settlers claimed they simply found them and used them. It is now believed they were built by Norseman who came to North America.  This one is on a public road so anyone can see it, others are protected and being studied by Universities. I have seen others that have been untouched. Notice flat stones on the structure and the typical round stones used on the wall next to it.

This is a building in the Bear Mountain area. It is right on the banks of the Hudson River. I peeked in the window and it may have been a bait shop and food stop since I saw coolers and fishing tackle displays. It has been emty since I started passing it about 10 years ago.

In a small Town called Verplank NY I sound these old gasoline tanks. Verplank is a Town is on a Point jutting out into the Hudson. They call themselves "Pointers". They do not like outsiders and used to take down the State sign that pointed to road leading to it. Someone stopped and asked what I was doing and naming "pointers" I knew, they told me these were Shell gasoline tanks, that for a while had been converted to storage barns.

This is a former Country Store on Route 301 in Putnam County. It is on one of of the best roads to ride on. I used to stop there along with a lot of bikes. A few years ago it suddenly closed. The spray painted words tell the story. The place was never much, and i doubt someone will reopen it. The Tables are already rotting away.

I have some other places I will be exploring this weekend.

Those stone structures are pretty neat. I saw the one reference to Bear Mountain. I was born/raised on Long Island, but as a kid, my parents friends had a cottage up there we were able to use. It was a small enclave of cottages around a natural pool. I 'think' is was called Cherry Valley?? I have no idea what it looks like today. I haven't been to the east coast since a bike trip to Montauk Pt. in 1982.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

It would be neat to go inside that old building, it's so damn ghastly looking, gotta be worth a peek.
And for the nine fingered people of Verplank......

Yup I already told them that. ;D
Pukeora used to be a sanitarium and place where people recovered from major surgery etc, it lay empty for decades then a young enterprising couple bought it an refitted it for backpacker stays, it still looks creepy as and sits at the top of a hill with a long winding road. :)

Damn IC I think my childhood flashed before my eyes looking at those links.  I have a memory for every one of the pictures they have on that site.  Although I'm kinda surprised they didn't show the bog Detroit side paddle wheeler.  it was like 5 or 6 stories high.  I think it got turned into a restaurant or something.

All on the east side if Muncie. There are10 or 15 more locations all with in 20 minutes of my house, some are now just fields but many still stand. This location had 21 buildings on it when they started tearing them down a couple years ago

Mark, looks like an old foundry of some sort, any idea as to what company it was? Or what was made there?

ISAW

Indiana steel and wire
It was a wire mill, they made galvanized coated wire for fence and cable and larger wire that was used to make bolts.

It had been in continuous operation for nearly 100 years

There is a foundry another mile or so over that is even older, it was closed several years before this place and no one has even begain to clean it up

Sad when you think of all the people who put their lives into places like that, the daily routines and comaradery that would have prevailed.
Abandoned empty buildings always make me feel that way.

I have been watching this building die for a couple of years. It is the former Boyce Thompson Institute for plant research in Yonkers NY.

It was getting dark and I was not ready to go inside very far. I will go back in a few days during the day. I will bring a friend of mine and we will be packin heat since I expect some odd characters will be living in there.
