Top-end Gaskets
« on: July 07, 2009, 03:47:32 PM »
Can you put a Cometic copper base gasket on dry, or do you need to coat it with Gaskacinch? I read that you should only apply sealant on the head gasket, not the base, but Cometic's instructions say differrent. Experts, what do you think?

I put all my gaskets on dry, but I used OEM.  I did put a light bead of Aviation Sealer on the pucks.
Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

I'm no expert, but I used gaskacinch on my copper cometic base gasket just to be sure. Not sure it's necessary. Gaskacinch is pretty easy stuff, not so messy or prone to gumming things up like the silicone and other "sealant" type products.
Give me..a frame to build a bike on, and my imagination will build upon that frame

Mroso, Could be wrong, but the best reason for a copper base gasket which comes to mind is for turbo application where dropping compression ratio is desired. in this instance there are usually different thicknesses avail.and sometimes used in comination.in these situations, spray Copper coat is usually used. for stock motors, my preference is OE.dry. Fibre/carbon head gaskests have weeped since inception. issuring head and cyl surafaces are flat & true are a must of course, but in my experiance original failure is at oil passage orings allowing eventual deterioration  at gasket. coat ing these areas w/ Indian Head  shellac and allowing to dry before installation helps. luck G

Good points... hmmmm... I have a Vesrah fiber base gasket and the Cometic copper. Anyone else prefer one over the other.

I got the gasket kit from Cycle X. I think it was Emgo.

Nothing on the base gasket. A light copper coating on the headgasket. Permatex Ultra Silver underneath the pucks (cleaned the sealant from the top of the pucks). Over a 1000 miles later, zero leaks.

No opinions on this?

On the contrary, there are lots and lots of opinions on this subject.  Do a search for "gasket sealer", or something to that effect.
