Fuel line size
« on: November 17, 2005, 08:31:48 pm »
What size fuel line do I need for my 73 750.
I have 3/16 i.d on there now and today I got the bike up to 65 mph and it seemed like it was starving a little but when I dropped down to 50 mph it was fine.
Any ideas?

That line should work. But, Honda calls for a 5.5mm line, and 1/4" fuel hose will work too.

I have inline fuel filters that are quite clear and visible from normal driving position with a little duck of the head. I left the fuel line a little long so I can pop the tank to do carb work easily - let's me see that there is actually fuel in the lines. No second guessing when you can see that they are full.

just a thought.

But that was what I had in my toolbox the day the stock line decided to crack...

I have 3/8 fuel line on my 750.

And how did you attach the 3/8" fuel line to the fittings on the petcock and carbs?
Are there replacement fittings available that none of us know about?

Thanks

I have a 3/8 fuel line comming down from the petcock , to a T-Fitting , that has smaller
line going to each carb.

I used a thing called a hose clamp to tighten the hose to the petcock.
Nifty little device. Compresses with just the turn of a flathead screwdriver... ;D
Has been this way sience the day after I bought the bike , with no leaks what-so-ever....

My fuel lines are showing their age, so I got some 1/4" line to replace it.  I have a pair of in-line fuel filters.  Is there any magic to what size/type to get as a replacement?  Or do I just go to the local auto parts store and get something that looks like the same thing?

Thats all I did, bought 1/4 fuel line for a mower, and two inline filters. The only leak since then is one brass nipple came out of the petcock when I pull the tank.  Doing a paint job on the frame, and rings in the engine.

Dealers around here only have the blue stuff in 3/16 (.187") or 1/4 (.250") . If my math is right 5.5mm comes in about .220", or

right between 3/16 and 1/4. I tried the 1/4", it was OK when new but leaked after about a year. I put the 3/16" on this year and

no problems so far, but it was mighty tight going on. I have saved the original hoses as a backup, but I would really like to find

some nice OE type 5.5mm stretchy fuel line. I also pulled one of the brass nipples out of the petcock when removing the stiff

original fuel line, tapped it back in and no further problems.

I also use 1/4". I seem to recall I did a search for 5.5 mm fuel line and the only sources I found sold it in 50 ft lengths for what I thought was a bit much $$ since all I needed was a couple feet.

Rubber fuel line used to be available in 32nds. 7/32 is close enough to 5 or 5.5 mm.
Don't know if it is still available. A friend gave me the last of his, all of about 2-1/2 feet. Most of it's on my 750 now.

7/32 = .21875"
5.5 mm = .217
5.0 mm = .197"

It has been suggested to me to try a mower or tractor shop.

I get my metric hose of the bulk reel at the honda dealer.

7/32 works, also.  But, be cautious that it is fuel line and not vacuum hose.  Vacuum hose may not be fuel resistant.

Howdy,
I'm trying to sort out the fuel line needed for my 75' CB550.

Right now it has some hose coming down from the petcock that is about 1/4" in diameter and goes to a inline fuel filter. The same type of hose then goes from the fuel filter to the carbs. This hose is a clear hose. It looks very similar to something that you would see used with aqarium air lines. The nice thing about this being clear is that you can tell if fuel is getting to the filter, etc.

Could this be the correct type of hose or not? It looks like this has been on there for quite a long time and seems to be holding up, but if it's not the right stuff I like to get it corrected.

The correct fuel line is metric sized 5.3 or 5.5 mm, which fits on the nipples properly.  The closest match in english measurements is 7/32 but it seems to only be available in vacuum hose these days, which is not fuel resistant.  The Honda dealer has the correct black stuff sold in bulk or by the foot.  The fuel system is so simple, "seeing" the fuel is hardly a necessity.  Lordy, its all of a foot and half long.  Seems the wrong idea to look at your fuel line while riding along anyway.

If you can find "Tygon" in 7/32 it will work and you can watch the fuel in it. :o

All True! It just does my heart good to see that $2.29 a gallon "Blood" surging through my bikes veins. And yes, difficult to look at while rolling. Hmmmm...perhaps a remote camera with a heads-up display in my helmet would be in order.  :o

Thank you for the info TwoTired. Much appreciated  :)

Motion pro makes the correct size in gray color. I got mine for my 750 at an independant cycle parts shop. It has a thinner wall thickness than the O.E. stuff though, but seems to work well so far.

Hey all, I moved the needle clips up one notch and it took care of my problem.
Got the bike up to 80-85 mph and didn't lean out so I think I will stick with that setting for now.

I found a Honda dealer in my area that has 30 feet of 5.5mm ID fuel line.  If you want some and are willing to pay the postage and whatever it costs per foot, let me know.
