Shadow VT1100 plug wires
« on: July 15, 2009, 08:44:08 PM »
I want to replace the plug wires and caps on my 1987 Shadow. Since I ride this bike almost everyday, and have since the price of diesel shot through the roof last year, I don't want to take the chance of disabling the bike by tearing apart the old sealed wires before I know what I need to replace them. Can anyone tell me if I need copper core wires and resistor caps? I don't want to pay the $100 plus that Honda wants for stock wires when I can fashion my own for a fraction of that.

I tried posting this question on a couple of Shadow forums, but those folks are not helpful unless you are asking about chrome. My local Honda dealders also were not helpful as they wanted to sell me stock wires.

Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.

If your plugs have an R on them (from NGK) then they are resistored plugs with most likely unresistored wires.

If not then the wires have resistors in the caps or in the lines. (most common)

Either way NGK makes some pretty decent resistored line for relatively cheap.

Looks like stock plugs are DPR7EA-9.

Depending on the cap type I have NGK red resistor wire and you could use DP7EA-9 plugs and be fine.

Plugs are $2.95 each and wires are $22.95 each.
