79 CB650 Gets a different rear fender.
« on: July 16, 2009, 11:19:25 PM »
I really dislike the look of the stock rear fender and gaudy taillight so I thought I'd try to replace it. I got this fender off of an unknown bike at a salvage yard (was just a frame and engine). I know it wasn't a Honda, though... So the fender gets to start a new life on a REAL bike. :D

The first thing I noticed is that the fender is way too long to fit inside the frame of my bike. I chopped the thing almost in half and shoved it in. Magically the original mounting holes lined up!

The next thing I noticed, is the big "gap" in front of the fender right above the tire. I thought this looked like crap so...

The fender didn't come with a taillight and the 650's stock taillight wouldn't fit inside the rear of the fender so I spent a whopping $2.29 on an LED "marker" taillight. It's about 4 inches wide and has 6 LEDs in it. At first I was concerned with the brightness, it being so much smaller and all. However, don't worry, it's not a problem! I plugged it into my 14.4v power supply and almost went blind it's so bright! The dang thing is a lot brighter than the stock tail/brake light. With a supply voltage of 14.4v, the light draws 1.6 watts. I'm going to add a 150 ohm resistor in-line with the power for the running lights so it will brighten when I hit the brakes (brake lights will bypass the resistor). With the 150-ohm resistor in-line, the light draws 0.6 watts.

That fender appears to be off of a Sportster.

Looks nice on your bike.

Looks like a ducks' bill. :D
Those lights will look cool though, pictures at night when you have finished Pinhead.
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Some more... I painted it gray because that's all I had on hand at the time (which looks better than pink/red LOL).

I tried taking a pic of the taillight tonight when I got home (3am) but all the camera could pick up was a big red blob.
