My Custom Oil Tank
« on: July 20, 2009, 12:31:12 pm »
Some of you have asked about the tank on my bike. Wanted to list the parts I used to help out. All in all it cost me about $100 to build.

I used this filler neck from a VW:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-TYPE-1-VENTED-ANGLED-BILLET-OIL-FILLER-NECK-EMPI_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4506Q2em20Q2el1116QQhashZitem5d249233feQQitemZ400045519870QQptZLHQ5fDefaultDomainQ5f100QQsalenotsupported

4.5" 6061 Aluminum round tube, think it was around 7-8" long

1/4" 6061 Aluminum Plate, cut to 4.5" round disks

Welded the tank closed.

Welded on 2 -10 AN fittings, one on the bottom (feed) and one on the top side (return)

Welded on 2 ears out of alum and screwed it to the inner part of the frame.

Last powdercoated it, filled it. Holds about 2.5qt. No problems with oil getting to the motor.

Here is a pic of the tank before redoing the bottom AN fitting and moving it to the top side:

Here it is mounted on the bike:

Hope this helps. The main reason for doing this was to free up the frame (see through). I plan to tap the tank with a oil temp gauge soon as well.

forgot to add. I used -10 push on hose. Used the stock fittings into the motor. I cut the original hose off the fitting and refit the new braided hose onto the fitting.

nice tank,
i have built one very similar for my project, mine is 4.25 id (4.5 od with 1/8 inch thick walls) and 10 inches long, i did the math and that equals only about 2.3 quarts total volume, i dont think that you would want to top it off so mine might hold a max of 2 quarts, i am considering running a oil cooler to make up for some lost volume and to help with cooling.
how much open space do you have at the top of your tank after you put oil in it? any problems with over flow or over heating?
Funny thing about regret is...... its better to regret something you have done than to regret something you haven't done.

Nokrome, have to re measure the length. I have not had any over heating problems yet. As for room at the top of the tank. Not sure either. Have to look into that for you. I remember putting more than 2 qts though. I like the idea of running an oil cooler. May experiment with that over the winter.

Nicely done.  You should make some and sell 'em!

Also where did you get the hose?

Gracias...

There are 2 ears welded onto the tank. Drilled a hole and screwed it to the frame. I will take better pics for you.

I love the empty frame look.  I've been pondering a custom setup for some time.  Great job.  Any problem getting a tool in for cam chain adjustment?
