Maier USA :( - UPDATE
« on: July 22, 2009, 09:52:04 AM »
So, I pony up US$41.54 x 2, plus shipping, for Maier side covers for my cb750F, '76. One of the old ones is cracked beyond recognition, the other was either lost or stolen (I was convinced of stolen as soon as I figured out what they cost).

That was about a year ago, and I didn't get around to putting them on the bike 'till last night. The left one went on like butter - the tabs were the perfect distance apart and everything. The right one is entirely the wrong size. The shape looks good - it's trying to be a reproduction side cover for my bike - but there's just no way it'll fit. The three tabs that are supposed to be drilled to fit the mounting screws are about 1/2" too far apart from each-other. This thing just won't fit on the bike.

This morning, I call Maier in Grass Valley California and speak with a nice enough lady. I tell her about my problem.
"Oh. Ok. would you like to send it back?"
Well, yes, I would, but I already painted it, so they won't take it back, which would be understandable if this was a working part. Now, here's the part that really gets me. I'm not the first one to have complained about this! I got the impression as soon as I told her the model number that she had heard this one before. I even asked her point blank if I was the first one to complain.
"Honestly, no."

I was hoping to hear that they had recognized the error, done a recall or re-issued a new model RHS cover that fit the bike. Much to my dismay, you can still buy the non-fitting part from maier's website.

SO: Maier = thumbs down.

I'm pretty sure these will fit though.

Funny -- I ordered the Maiers for my 76 750F when I had it and I put on the left one, but never put on the right because I decided the glossy black oil tank looked fine with no cover at all (I even glued the honda emblem right on to the tank). Long since sold the bike but I apparently have a new-in-package non-fitting Maier 750F cover sitting somewhere in a box downstairs.

Wonder if only the F has this issue. I got K style ones years ago and they fit ok. Some trimming and such but no real issues. i like the screw on part since at least a thief would have to have a screwdriver to get them off.

So, the folks at Maier are trying to be helpful. They sent back email suggesting that I might not have the bike I think I have, etc. I assured them that I did, and that their RHS cover doesn't fit it.
I then challenged them to show me a picture of their cover installed on my bike, and they sent me this guy's website.

Does anyone know him? I tried emailing to figure out what he did to properly get that cover on there, but no dice.

+1 on LPM. Got 'em last month for my 77 F. Fast Shipping. Great product. Had my paint guy spray 'em metalflake black to match the tank.  Much sturdier than the original cracked ones I had.  They are gorgeous and fit perfect, nice and snug with my new grommets. I even got the repro emblems and painted the gold on them with a paint pen and cleared 'em so they look brand new too. Had to go to pep boys and buy speed nuts to put the emblems on though, weird they didn't come with them but not complaining. OK, so it ended up being $250 by the time it was all said and done, but I would do it again.
