Comstar Rims on the 500
« on: July 22, 2009, 06:07:55 PM »
Hey there folks. First time post. Great place here.
Building a CB555 and I'm fitting up some Comstar wheels from a 1980 CB750C and was wondering if anyone had any experience aligning the countershaft sprocket with the rear wheel sprocket. Gonna be figuring it out anyway soon, but if anyone has any tips they would be much appreciated. I'll keep an update as to how i do it as well for those interested.

will post build pics as well

When I swap a rear wheel onto a different bike, here's what I do.  Measure from the centerline on the old wheel to the back side of the drive sprocket.  This measurement needs to be the same on the new wheel.  So you might have to machine the cush drive in or space the sprocket outwards.  Next step is to place the stock wheel, with the cush drive and the outside left spacer in place, on a work bench.  Then put a straightedge across the top outside edge of the spacer and measure again to the centerline on the wheel.  Your new wheel with the cush drive and spacer will need to be this same measurement.  Usually this is adjusted by putting in a larger or smaller spacer.  Lastly, insert your new wheel, cush drive and left spacer into the swingarm and simply fill in the blank space on the right side of the wheel with the appropriate sized spacers.

Might be a bit of work to shrink that 750 hub enough to get the sprocket closer to centreline..

Thanks guys. Gonna do the whole measuring thing.
I told myself this would be a very meticulous build, one in which i measured absolutely everything and logged them. As i get into it i realize that in skipping some of these important steps i only slow my progress by not following my own rules.
Fun stuff.

I just did this swap. I put them from a 79 750 onto my 73 750. Pics are blurry. I will get better pics later. Here is the link to the thread. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=55932.0

Wish I had your answer, cause then my next project would be complete...
I've a set of Comstars from a 82 Hawk 450 that I'm hoping to install on my 74 CB550.  Trying to find some free time to get that project "rolling" has been pretty tough with all the mandatory OT at work...
I'll be watching this one pretty close!
