Do I Have A "Vintage" Problem?
« on: July 24, 2009, 03:54:55 PM »
Admittedly, this may be the wrong group to ask, but sometimes poachers make the best game wardens, if you catch my meaning.

Obviously, I have a couple vintage Honda SOHC/4 bikes, both from '75. My everyday cage is '79 Ford F 100 that's in totally sweet condition. Now, the other night I went to an auction and bought a 1944 Delta Unisaw (that's a table saw used for building cabinets and furniture which is part of my trade). I plan on doing a complete resto on the Unisaw (thank goodness much easier than rebuilding a bike). But still, I wonder if I should be looking into a 12 step program????

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention . . . my house is 140 years old but it's for sale (any interested parties??) because we'd like to downsize with the kids gone. But we're looking for something more cozy in the 180 year old range.

I think i have the same problem..

I've got a 1938 sears table saw, no safety features, open belt, not grounded.

I own 3 cars and 2 bikes, and only one of those is younger than i am, but not by much.

Nope, your fine.  They don't make them like that anymore.  I picked up a old 15" General band saw.  Had to take it apart to get it in the basement.  Now if I could only find a nice old metal lath.

yes you have a vintage problem.  take 4 rides daily and procure more classic bikes. that should help most of the addiction.
These bikes dont die, they hibernate until the right person wakes them up again.

aside from my bike collection i just picked up a 1914 singer sewing machine... i justify my obsession with vintage with the cliche that they're not built as good today (which is probably true, the singer is highly sought after by cobblers and leather workers)

I've got a thing for 100 year old brass desk fans. Wrong group to ask that question.

Well, speaking of "not making them like they used to," my plan for the old table saw is to do a head to head comparison with a brand new, altogether redesigned Delta Unisaw. The new one has many new, and I think important, features that are actually improvements. I expect to find that there are improved design features (one would hope so after 65 years of making he same machine) but the old one will have superior manufacturing. For example, the old girl on first exam has a cast iron table that looks to be dead flat, an important feature. I don't expect to find the newly minted one nearly so good. I also expect to find the old motor to be superior to the new one.

I publish a woodworking magazine for my day job so will post an ongoing blog about all this. Fun to have the bully pulpit.

Ok let me get this straight...you like old stuff?? I am in the same boat with you. My stereo is a 1977 Kenwood KR9940...the eq, bass enhancer, power meter, cassette deck turntable and speakers are of all the same vintage. Lets also add that i still have my Commodore computer system. I still have my first stereo, a all in one unit (AM/FM/Turntable/Cassette and 8 Track w/record)from radio shack from about 1979. I have 2 1980's jamboxes. My everyday driver is a 1969 Chevy stepside truck. My project car is a 1977 El Camino, My bike is a 73 Honda 750, I still have a late 80's Fisher VCR, My dwell and tach meters are from the 70's and most of my Snap - on Tools are from the 70's. One tool box I own is stamped right on it...January 1964.

And YOU say You need a 12 step program??  :D
