The /rant thing makes sense now. I am the person that takes care of the website at work, internal only tho. We have marketing companies that take care of the rest. It kills me tho because they insist on IIS and I am more of an Apache guy. Still I do some coding but mostly I leave that to others more skilled then I am.

I know exactly what you mean about feebay, I am off to scour Amanzon since you may not be the only one that switched and perhaps I can use that to my advantage.

i've heard a few people with the same complaint about eb. too bad as i was going to look into selling some of my art there (if i got off my keister and produced), but now i'm lookin elsewhere. i love amazon so if they competed i'd be an easy convert!

i'd love to see close up pix of your (bikes) seat.::)  the idea that a cool custom chopper type deal works out well on our kinda bike and mates up with a the hinge n stuff is neato.

i was gonna, ask but you volunteered, the sound clip of those pipes.

feeBay might be OK to sell art on except they might charge some really high fees just to list it, if you put a high price on your art (whether or not it sells, you still have to pay the fees). Depending on what kind of stuff you do, http://www.etsy.com/ might be a better match?  What kind of art do you do? I paint, sculpture (carve soapstone and pipestone), write, do music, etc. - a renaissance gal.   ;D

Here are the original pictures in the feeBay ad, of the seat. The seller had two of them they sold a week apart about two years ago, and I have never seen the same seat before or since. They were NOS (new, old stock) and in great shape except for a bit of rust on the pan. There was just a sticker on the bottom that said CB500 and that's it - no other info. They both sold for under $40?!?  I really should have bought the second one too. ..

RE: the exhaust sound, I think I will have to do like a short video or something, as I was just given a video camera that uses compact flash cards. It's kinda crappy but would be enough to do a video of the bike running. Maybe I will have to have fun with it too, and dress kinda hot and kick start then rev the bike or something. . . .LOL

i'll look into etsy.com, thanks. i do mostly oil paint and pencil but i've been working with charcoal and oil pastels too. i've done some sculpture but gotta do more. i'd like to pick up wood carving... or chain saw, just because it's nuts! i have done soap stone a ways back but just a little, and... dang it girl ya gotta post stuff in the art(ist) thread!!

dumb question: pipestone?

yeah that might have been a good idea to snag the other seat. too much is better than not enough i always say!  ;D vintage after market stuff is really cool whether or not it ends up being valuable.

all i read was "bla bla bla... dress kinda hot"... something about a bike or something, then the room went dark.  :-[

Yes we would like that.. however even just of the bike is good. My cell phone worked for bike videos, tho the sound was crappy. 5min of video should not take that much space on the card..

Yea, I am digging that seat also. There is a guy around here that comes to your house with a trailer and custom makes seats complete with Jell insert. I plan to have him do mine, I will show him this picture and see what he can do. He quoted me $175 to do mine, it may be a bit more to replicate that seat, but well worth it..

I plan to get it done in the fall, I will post picks weather or not it turns out.

Here is an exhaust set just like mine - they seem to be pretty rare on eBay:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180394616337&viewitem=

They are pretty sweet - I get a lot of compliments on the sounds when I am scooting around. .  .. I hope to eventually post a sound/video file of them.

theres a flared end air cooled vw tailpipe for the stock muffler that might give it a touch less back pressure than the stock tailpipes, little bit more sound too without being too obnoxious

I used to restore old VWs. The whistling sound comes from the internal packing in the exhaust tips becoming loose and vibrating like a woodwind reed. Also, the tips were installed with a muffler and would sound different than the MC would. BTW, I did this back when I couldn't afford stock mufflers for a CX500 that I had and they sounded pretty good.  ;D

I have that exact same 4 into 2 system on my 750k... is there any baffles in your's moto-bunny? My bike seems to not have enough backpressure but pops little fire balls outta the pipes at night ;D.  But alas it is a very untuned sound :-\

It has some kind of packing, I think in it. Makes for a mellow sound at idle that gets into more of a roar with more throttle. They really seem to be about the perfect compromise between having a hot rod sound but not waking up the whole neighborhood at night, when starting the bike.  ;D

Ugh, which reminds me that I totally need to get a sound recording of the exhaust-I totally forgot before to, maybe I can get to it tomorrow?  :P

try 'beetle mufflers' instead and you might get more hits . .    ;)    j/k

I've been out of the air cooled VWs for awhile now and most of the VW parts suppliers I used were pre-internet, too.  :o   (gawd, I'm old. . .. lol)   so I can't be of much more help than anyone's googling. . ...

However, I used to order stuff from these guys all the time and visit their store in Michigan, they have been in business for many years. It's crazy big and they have all sorts of parts sources plus are always parting stuff out. You might be able to get some good lightly used German made OEM VW exhaust tips or something. They don't seem to really have a whole lot on their site but calling them might pan out well. (their number is at the top of their page plus they have parts request forms)
Parts Place inc.

There's also always J.C. Whitneys and they seem to have a lot of different VW bug exhaust tip types-some interesting ideas in there for custom CB exhaust applications.

Thanks, for that helpful insite.  I called the auto parts dealer in my town yesterday and they wanted $99 per tip so this is a much better deal. I think this will be pirfect for the undertail exhaust I would like to do on my Cafe Build.

I bought these a couple of weeks ago:

http://www.jcwhitney.com/chrome-exhaust-tips-for-55-74-volkswagen/p2006270.jcwx?skuId=159253

They ARE cheap!  And I mean cheap.  Anyway, since they're the exact same diameter as the stock head pipes, I haven't gotten them on my pipes yet.  I was hoping to be able to coax them to slip-fit, but no luck.  I cut some reliefs in them with an air cut-off wheel, the help.  The chrome flaked off around my cuts.  Like I said, cheap stuff.

Meanwhile, I'm still running open head pipes, cut off just beneath the rider footpegs.  It's loud and leaves me smelling of 35 year-old bike exhaust.  Eau de Honda, maybe?  ;D

Thanks for the post, I was searching for info on these EXACT tips. I found them on JC Whitney as well, and was on the fence about buying. Maybe I'll have some luck in finding a piece of small pipe to act as a coupling that slip fits the two, either ID or OD of both pipes.
Could always weld or braze them on I guess.

What? No, I don't have these tips on my bike, sillys!

I was asked to post a soundclip of my present exhaust earlier in the thread but it's not one with VW tips on it, just an older 4 into 2 setup that sounds good. I just knew of the VW mini-muffler tips from having worked on old VWs 'back in the day'. Then I saw an auction on feeBay where they had modded open pipes to use the VW tips to quiet them a bit and just thought it was a good idea and posted it here.

Have y'all actually read this thread fully????   lol  :P
