tonight i have purchased 20 ft of 1/4 hose, 2 tee's and 2 elbows and 4 thingamabobs. :) found a site where they showed how to make your own sync tool so i'll be trying to sync the bikes carbs tonight

Bunny made a really wicked one that's on here somewhere, too. Probably the same parts, or similar- hers is based off the original 'honda' one. Might want to look it up just to see  if the two different directions for the same thing give you a better grasp of the components. 

I just bought mine.  Not as cool, I know, but... some of this stuff just hopelessly confuses me. :D

I use mercury.  It seems to provide the most accurate reading and super simple to compair each cylinder

its not hamrlufl ot my bairn ro aynhtnig!  ;D

I'm an idiot. I'd recently changed the head gasket and when putting everything back together, i'd switched the 2 and 4 wires and that is why it was missing on the 2 and 4 cylinder. I did get the nanometer built and now have the carbs synched so I'm pretty happy because it's running fairly nice now. :)

Yes....you are an idiot, but be prepared to do the odd dumb thing as you find your way around the old bike. ;D
We have a special post somewhere for the "I'm an idiot" moments, and we have all had them so don't kick yourself, besides it gives us "old hands" a chance to stretch our grey matter and attempt to analyse your problem. :D
I think the thing I most like about motorcycling is the speed at which my brain must process information at to avoid the numb skulls who are eating pies, playing the ukulele, applying make-up etc in the comfort of their airconditioned armchairs as they make random attempts to kill me!!!!!!!

Hey sorry its been a while since i posted up.

Anyway the project runs great and i drive it every day.

I love this thing.

Its still a work in progress. But its coming along nicely if you ask me.


I also have some extra parts that i dont want and may be able to help someone here. Ill post the pictures up ASAP.

Now that's kinda cool, you got a bobber look without losing the basic 650 lines altogether and you have something you enjoy riding, I think that is the name of the game here eh. :)

Hi all just joined the site, i also bought a 1980 cb650 custom for 100 bucks in great condition except the carbs are giving me problems. I've narrowed it down to being the pilot jet, i believe its the jet that is pressed into the carb and i was wondering what the best way to get that jet out to clean it would be?? thanks for any help!

Hey, weltzing - Welcome to the forums! 

First thing you'd want to do is hit the main page and search the forums.   There are a lot of carb threads in there, and one of those will probably have an answer for you (I'm really not that great with carbs, myself.)  If not, the next step would be to start a thread in the SOHC/4 Bikes section.  Since this is someone's build thread, you're a lot less likely for someone to happen upon your question (especially since this thread hasn't been active for about six months.)  The SOHC section is more the place for technical questions and answers.

It also wouldn't hut to jump over to the new member introduction threads and say hello and let people know who you are.

Again, welcome aboard - there's lots of good info in here.

Hey! 

Ok so its been a while and works been kicking my butt,  Im back to having problems....  So i can get the bike running and all good, however.....  I BROKE THE CHOKE!   the little black plastic tab on the carbs shattered... i feel like such an idiot.  So my next question is, Can i use a carb from a different CB? I want to just replace my entire rack. Its got 4 tapped screws and numerous problems... So i was thinking it might just be best to replace the entire thing?? Any one have any input on replacing with a carb off of a different bike? 


Would a CB 750 or 550 work for my app?

Could i just switch my jets with the others is they are different???

Any info on this homemade sync? A webpage with a how to??

No the other earlier 350/500/550/750 carbs wont fit without major mods.
However if you can score a set of CV carbs off an 81/82 (last of the 650's) you can have snap open throttles that are massively responsive.
I got a full set from a wrecker for $50.

Not quite, I think the carb boots need to be angled a bit. Soos and Hush would know better than me. The spacing isn't the same as I understand it. The carb kits are much cheaper though on the CV carbs. Like by 1/2.  ;)

either the spacing isn't the same or the actual intake diameter isn't the same... something like that.  750 carbs will fit the 1980 650... but I forget which ones- that's a Soos question.

I'll save you and Soos some time since I've read most of his posts and swapped the carbs myself. I put some early 70's 750 carbs on my 80 650 and ran into some problems. The cable holders on the 750 are too far forward you'll have to do something about that, air intake side is about 5mm smaller in diameter on the 650 so the 650 boots either have to be clamped rediculously tight (i worried about them not sealing properly, and long term about cracking in the rubber) or you'll have to either modify the intake diameters (I toyed with the idea of having pvc machined down to do the job) or switch to Pods (which is ultimately what I did, I can not comment on whether they are better or worse than the airbox as I really haven't done more than idle with them.) The other problem with the 750 carbs is they are shorter front to back, I found some marine grade fuel/exhaust hose that I'd made some boots out of, but that presents some other issues as well. If you choose to go this route and have any questions feel free to PM me or check out my build thread. I won't comment on whether this is the route to go or not, it was an individual choice because I hated the stupid choke cable and how expensive the 650 carbs are to rebuild, again, personal opinion.

Also from what I've read the spacing on the 650 cv carbs is different, I can't remember if there were any diameter issues or not, and I think they are taller. I just know that from what I read it is far from a direct drop in replacement, otherwise Soos would likely have ran them. He is currently running Ninja 600 carbs on his hopped up 650.

Can you not fab up some sort of cable holder for the 650 carbs? Sorry, I gave both my sets to Soos or else I'd see if I could come up with any helpful suggestions.

Well i got my bike running no problem, it was actually an air leak on the number 4 and 2 were killing my motor!  And the carbs a bit dirty wasnt helping either. 

Ok so now my next question...  2 screws for my carb bowls arent holding very tightly and i dont want to strip them out, Is there anyway to fix them befor they get worse without putting a helicoil or taping them for a larger size?

I had same problem with carb screws (stupid stupid little horrible cross heads) so replaced them with Allen key screws which are easier to tighten and remove if you need to.
I also found that the new Allen key screws having new thread bit in more and secured the carb bowls where the cross heads were failing.
My record for removing my 650 carbs is 17 times in a row to fix a leak so I know what I am talking about when it comes to these suckers. ;D
Using a hex key in such a confined place beats trying to manoeaver a cross head screw driver (if you can find one that is short enough and works) hands down. ;)
Also if you do go right through the threads you can fit longer screws with small nuts on them from the top. :)

+1 and you can always saw off an allen key to get it exactly the right length.

I'm anticipating more carb fun because I think it might be worthwhile to soak some airbox isolators in wintergreen oil and see if that sorts out any potential air leaks.  These bikes run super-lean as it is, at idle... they need all the help they can get!

i bought brand new isolators a while ago to fix my old ones. So i know they are a ok.  I do still have my old ones that didnt seem to be in terrible shape is anyone is intrested in them. 

Im gonna go play around with the bike to try and get it running a little better...

Im still having a hard time getting it running when its cold.  Runs great once its warm but man is it a b@#$ch to start...
