Replace the rubber dampers on my F1?

I've got the rear wheel off and the hub apart on my F1 rebuild to clean everything and replace the original bearings and seals.  Also going to rebuild the rear brake and swing arm bushings while it is apart. 

The rubber damper parts in the hub are not broken, but the rubber is as hard as I would expect for a 33 year old motorcycle.  The 8 damper pieces would run about $150.00 on the one website that I checked.

Is it "standard practice" to replace these parts during a rebuild?

The ones in my '75 F are original and the bike is coming up on 119,000 miles.  They seem to be doing fine. 

How hard is hard?  Are they crumbling or cracking?  Is there no cush at all?

No obvious crumbling or cracking.  I haven't removed each one and done a close examination at this point.  My "barn find" has under 20,000 miles, so the dampers shouldn't be worn out.

Mostly wondered how critical it is that these rubber pieces are soft, and if I would notice the difference if I replace them.  I hate to spend another $150 if I don't have to...

I doubt if you have anything to be concerned about.  I check mine every tire change and I haven't noticed any change over the years.  Since they are not subject to much heat, they don't seem to deteriorate like other rubber parts on the bike, like carb rubbers for instance.
