Pressed in jet => screw in jet => ?
« on: August 14, 2009, 05:35:28 AM »
We are talking about the OEM PD carbs on 1980 bikes here....

With all the threads about pressed in jets... has anyone ever converted or thought about converting to screw in style slow jets?  Is it even possible without just changing the carb rack which would have a pandora's box of tuning nightmares?

Digging thought the past here, I found where someone DID tap the carbs to accept screw in jets. Apparently you have to be very careful as there is not much metal there and you might need a smal amount of locktite to make sure the jets do not fall out.

Really?!  You have a link, or the tags you used?  I searched for a while and couldn't find much about the subject..

Different idle jets including press ins.

Now It was done by Buffo who changed his name to south padre don according to old posts.

I have not found what size hets he used but he is the one that has tapped his carbs for screw in jets. I have limited time since I am at work right now so hopefully that gives you enough to go on. Just do a search on his name. Like I said, it was old posts so look in the 05-06 range.

I've done this and was on at least one of the previous posts on this topic.  You can basically just screw in the new jet but have to be very careful to keep the straight (after a turn or two it takes care of itself) and don't try to wrench it down too tight.  Use a little oil on the threads the first time, pull it out, clean with gas, then put back in.  I didn't need locktight but it wouldn't hurt.

good luck

Did you just get a standard keihin idle jet or did you have to get a particular size?

I was working on a '78 750 and used the pilots from a '69-'76 750.
