hrmm...
Have you VERIFIED(and how) that your valve timing is set right?
It sounds like your cam is 1 tooth out either way, and as you adjust the clearance for the valvetrain assembly thats when you start having your interference between the piston and the valves and then not letting the motor turn over properly.
