For the life of me I cannot remember if the positive lead goes to the cable on the starter to bench test it. feelin kinda (DER) right now.

mounting lug or case is ground, wire is to + terminal. Be careful, they jerk hard occasionally.

Seriously though, I've bench-tested some by screwing them down to my workbench with some long screws and using jumper cables to a spare battery. Lots of amps and torque in those motors so use care.
