Yep, This is a 1959 Indian (rebadged Royal Enfield) Chief, 700cc vertical twin. 2tone paint and fender light aren't original. Check out this link: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1959-Royal-Enfield-Motorcycle-Indian-Chief-700CC_W0QQitemZ170372828773QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUS_motorcycles?hash=item27ab030e65&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245#v4-33

I don't know about being "Junky", I wouldn't realy want one myself, but they built some for public AND also for Police work, back then. The built them long enough to be sold under the Indian name and on to the period where the Matchless motorcycles picked up the Indian model names AND sold the Chief under the Indian name still.. All it was was a Royal Enfiel 700cc twin with slightly larger rims, tires and gas tank. There muight have been some other changes but not much. I'll tell you, I'd take a good deal on an Enfield Interceptor any day. Now, the paint job on THAT one wasn't original (the red might have been, but the WHITE wasn't. I believe that the only color the Chief came in was THAT red.

  • Can you tell?
RE bought the rights to use the name in "countries other than the US"

They took the badges made specifically for them and put them on modified Royal 500/700/800 cc bikes.

What you see there is more likely an imported Indian/European version.

$4500 is chump change for such a "rare" item here in the usa. In europe they are considered trash. Go figure.  :D
