Question about polishing the engine
« on: August 19, 2009, 06:09:06 pm »
Here's a question from a rank amateur, novice motorcycle owner. I want to polish some of the pieces of my CB750 engine case (if thats the right term) -- transmission cover, clutch cover, etc.  My questions are:

Are there any bits or pieces that I might remove that will damage gaskets that I should have on hand before removing the piece? Are gaskets hard to find or can they be fabricated from sheet material using the old gasket as a patter?

I'm assuming that some pieces, the transmission cover for instance, I will need to drain engine oil before removing or risk a puddle of oil on the garage floor.

No worries gaskets are readily available for these old beasts
Project Rina

That is an inconceivably egregious transgression against my rudimentary concordance of socially shunned individuals.

750 is a dry sump engine.

There will be some oil behind the covers.

Just shouldn't be 3 quarts...it should be in the tank.

While you have the covers off...replace the seals in the covers...

They never stand up well to age and high speed buffers....

Plus there is a lot of info on this board about polishing those covers.  Just do a search and have at it...
