Are all clutch covers created equal? (with crash pics)
« on: August 20, 2009, 05:16:44 PM »
So heres the thing, I dropped my bike on the clutch side at slow speeds the other day and the bike sliding ground a hole in my clutch cover which in turn made a huge mess as my oil just spilled out everywhere.  My question is I have a 76 cb750f would any old clutch cover I find on Ebay bolt on or do I need a 750F cover?
Also any other things I should check for damage? Do you think the actual clutch could be damaged?  Other than looking at the bike straight on is there a way to see if my forks got tweaked a bit?
Thanks

That isn't the clutch in there, it is the dyno which makes the electricity. Any 750 sohc dyno cover should fit. I think I saw new ones  available somewhere but a used one should be easy to find. Even a grungy one could be polished before installng it. The Later model speedo isn't too costly on E-bay. I hope you came through OK.

Yep - that is the alternator -clutch is on the opposite side..

You need to remove the transmission cover then the alternator cover to replace it..

I would also check your coil inside as it could well be damaged from the looks of your impact...or off centre where it needs to be..

So I waiting for the insurance company to come look at it and hopefully give me some moneys for the damage.  But after that, to remove this thing I just need to pop off the 10 or so hex bolts right?  Also if the coil is off center do I need to replace it or just straighten that thing out?  Sorry for all the beginner questions but I have never opened this motor up before.
Thanks

you need to pull the shifter cover first, thats the cover on the same side of the engine that the shifter shaft goes through

Why are you guys removing the shifter cover to get the dyno off?, its the sprocket cover you need to take off.

True, you need to remove the sprocket cover to undo the electrical connections, but the wires run along under the shifter cover and in some areas are held in place, so removing the alternator is next to impossible without removing the shifter cover first.

When you take that cover off, turn the engine over and see if there is an type of a wobble on the alternater end.I had the same kind of accident, replaced cover and motor would not turn over, bent the end of the crankshaft and had to replace it. :'(

I think if the crank is bent, the cover will be a lot worse than than.. about 3 x that much damage..
