head shake
« on: September 02, 2009, 10:40:44 AM »
I have a 1974 cb 550 that has a head shake issue. I put drag bars on the bike and took off the front fender. I dont think this contributes to head shake but when i am decerating with the throttle closed i notice wobble in the front wheel. If i grip the bars tight it is not an issue but as soon as i take a hand off i notice the wobble but it is only when decerating. Does anyone have a clue what this is from. My head bolts are all tight and the rim dosent seem to be bent.

What is the condition of your steering bearings?  Loose?  Notchy? Also check that your forks are square in the triple clamps by first checking the torque of the axle nut, loosening one of the forks in the triple clamps and then compressing and releasing the front end.  Then tighten the triple clamp bolts.

The front fender's bracket does double duty as a brace to keep the fork lowers from twisting relative to each other.  If you stand over the front wheel and hold it still with your legs while turning the bars back and forth you'll see the flexing.

Reinstall the front fender and see what happens.

I agree, put the fender back on, or install a fork brace.

If you want the no-fender look, drill out the rivets and just install the bracket.
