Well dan, a person with a disability is different as they cant help it. Besides, as I said, you can be sure those same accommodations would not be made in their country, especially for women. Given that, denying minor things such as a scarf really is small cookies.
But we can disagree, we still can do that here, be thankful as if we were in one of those countries, it would probably call for an honor killing or some such crap. ;)

True, I'm glad that I live in this country where I can actually voice opinions like this without threat of retribution.  What's funny is that "my country" is also "their country" if they are US citizens.  It is therefore irrelevant what happens in a more restrictive country; in this case I am only concerned about this kind of event happening in my country.  Granted, Hush is from NZ where the rules may be a bit different, but I'm sure the general theories are still the same.

You're right that a person cannot choose a disability as he/she can choose a religion, but the discrimination in both cases is still the same.  Denying a "small thing" like a headscarf can quickly lead to denying a "small thing" like allowing Muslims to practice their religion openly.  After all, this country was created on the basis of Christian ideals, why should they have the right to practice in this country?  So why should they be allowed to wear headscarfs when others are required to remove their hats?

Because the headscarf is a REQUIREMENT laid down in the tenets of their religious beliefs.  Religion isn't such an easy "choice" for most people.  Therefore, something that can be easily accommodated is something that should be accommodated to avoid discrimination in a society which practices religious freedeom.  Or would you rather "our" country be more like "their" country?

Sorry Spanner, forgot your question before I got off my soapbox. ;D
The "us" would be the ordinary Kiwi, weather that be Maori, European, Chinese who ever, just as long as they obey the same laws/rules we all have to observe.
You can't come over here and drive on the right hand side of the road even though it's more normal for you, no you change your ways while here.
If my partner were stupid enough to holiday in Iraq, Iran, Afganistan etc she would be "required" (or suffer stoning and being spat on) to wear a head scarf.
Why does the rest of the world have to bow down to the Muslim religion?
Just because they have groups who are not afraid to strap on a #$%* load of explosives and walk up to complete strangers (USA/Aussie/NZ/British troops) and detonate themselves because some idiot told them they will get 17 virgins when they hit Islamic heaven!
No I'll ride my bike on the righthand side of the road when I come over to the U.S. and I'll take my hat/helmet off if I go into your courts, I wont throw stones at your wife if she doesn't wear a scarf, it's the way I was brought up.......be afraid be very afraid not of the Muslim terrorist threat in the Arab world, it's the idiots who convert and suddenly decide all the normal things they were raised to obey/celebrate are now only done by Infidels! >:(
+1, I could not have said it better.
Its my Avatar..

yep nirvana dont apply, but i couldnt think of the word "paradise" at the time.
HOW about this.
Fairness should dictate that tolerance is a two way street, so will anybody advise me to go to bagdad and found a christian school, build a church for christians, and then build a lapdancing club?
only, i would imagine if you wanted me to be done away with.
by the same token, you do not go into a protestant church knowingly, and then moan that there is no confession box ,or statues of the virgin mary, or other catholic iconography....
it aint peoples personal religeon thats caused problems down the ages, its the governors of those religeons......
I mean, lets go to the holy lands and take the holy city of jerusalem by force and then try and hold onto it because the Pope says so???
Bound to cause repercussions in the future, and here is that future.....?

I believe they were taking back the Holy Land which had previously been conquered and taken by the Muslims... But that's a different topic entirely.

I, also have tried to stay away from this, but it seems to not be going away.  That, and a clear point(IMHO) has not been brought up.

First, comparing the headscarf in question to a ski mask or a helmet is unfair.  The scarf does not obscure the face(in this case-the woman made the choice of one that didn't cover her face) for means of ID, unlike a mask or helmet.  Second, as long as she made it past a metal detector(I don't know about NZ, but most courts in the US have them)who should care?

And if the Morris Dancer hat involves bells, I can certainly see how that might be distracting in a court room.  I'll bet bells of any kind (hat or coat...whatever) would be turned away at the door.
Go metric, every inch of the way!

We also don't allow baseball caps in court which is kinda standard wear for the young these days and also does not obscure the face.
Metal detectors are just coming into use here in our backwoods land. ;D
One of the hardest things we have to teach prisoners at my jail is to remove their head wear when entering a dinningroom to sit and eat, it's just good manners but it appears some neglectful parenting is to blame.
Many gang members I deal with consider their gang not only is their only religion but also more than family, sad but true, however they are not afforded the same curtesy when they go to court they are required to remove their "gang patch".
I'm sure some smart lawyer is going to challenge that one day. ;D
In our PC crazy country no doubt they will win too.

I'm with you on this one Hush. I was in NZ for the millennium sunrise in 2000 and the whole friggin beach had been fenced off by the local Maori because they decided that they owned the ocean and the fish in it, it was on the east coast Te Kaha rings a bell, yes it was Te Kaha. Anyway only 12 months earlier the NZ government opened up land there for development and my brother in law bought a nice block 2 minutes from the water, he had to sell it for a loss less than 2 years later because of the bloody Moari and the governments lack of back bone in dealing with the problem, they didn't want to upset the Maori..... ???

SCREW political correctness, lets get back to black and white, bugger all this grey area in the middle.....

PS, i'm coming over in January for a couple of weeks holiday,  Hush, where are you situated mate.?

Hi Hush, i always go fishing when i come over, my brother in law has a batch at Ohope Beach and we usually go to Whakatane and out from there, you can see white island puffing away to the south. My wife is from Rotorua and we stay there at her Mums place but Her birth Mum, {she's adopted} lives in Napier and have a holiday house on lake Taupo so hopefully i will fish the lake as well.

The weathers great at the moment, around 25-26 celcius. We have never been to Napier and we will be meeting inlaws at the lake, with fishing shooting and visiting all the rello's i don't know if we will make that far away but if its possible i would love to see Napier {doesn't it have all the art deco buildings?} And meet you guys, so anything is possible.
