bad stator and rotor? soaked in oil

i've been having charging issues for the last few weeks on my '77 550. my friends tried to help me troubleshoot the other day, and we tested everything. it all seemed to check out. i don't much about electrical, so i was relying on them. we concluded that it was dirty contacts. i started cleaning my wiring harness and decided to pop off the stator cover. it was covered in black crap and there was oil in there. if i didn't know better,  i wouldn't even guess that it's made of copper. there is also a burnt smell to it. i'm guessing that's my problem? my question is how the oil got in there and do i need to replace the rotor also. it almost looks likes there are grooves in it. i have an extra parts engine and both the rotor and stator look clean. i've attached some photos. let me know what you people think.

I think the problem is a lack of oil. Passage blocked? Also there looks looks like some drag marks on the rotor, was something contacting it? engine crud? Need more info.

The alternator is supposed to run dry. You must have a seal leaking at the crank. I doubt if oil would hurt it. Some Hondas ran a "wet" alternator. Change the seal and carefully clean the coils.

You can degrease the coil with Simple Green and carefully and thoroughly dry it. Then test it with a multimeter (search the archives or the FAQ for dozens of threads on this) and go from there.

That funny smell is normal also, a good clean and change out that seal and you are probably good to go.

The 400/4 also runs dry and I have had three stators where the fault was resistance between the coil windings and ground (ie the laminated frame of the stator) (Caused by breakdown of the insulating coating on the windings). You should have a reading of megOhms or infinite resistance. This is the first thing to check in my view. But I agree there are lots of postings on here regarding  how to check out.

The 550F parts fische shows oil seals on the ends of your crankshaft.  As mentioned some of them run dry, some with oil (my '71 CB175 for one).

today i swapped stators with a parts bike i have. that fixed it!
