Make sure you check out Torchmonkey’s Garbage Rebuild over in the Project Shop.  He built a great rotisserie engine stand which you can see below.  Great work Torchmonkey!

I took a litle holiday cash and bought myself 2 engine stands from Harbor Freight and modified them to create a rotisserie engine stand a la blake255. I'll spare you the details, you can read about how it's made here:

Starting to piece the motor back together, just waiting for the gasket set. While waiting I'll be powdercoating the head and head cover.

Thanks, I sent the pdf file and since it's easy, they're just going to use that. Told them to go ahead and make it up! get it in a couple of days. Thanks for working that up!

Got my C hook a bit ago, and got my engine out today. That thing worked like a dream!!!! took it out by myself, a piece of cake!!! Thanks for coming up with this idea!

Here's my version of the engine hook.  I really liked the one here but didn't have the resources for cutting or welding so this worked good for me.  One advantage is the clamp collars on the top bar can be adjusted to balance the load (get the motor level).  Next time I'm going to get some loop straps made up so I don't have to mess around with the ratchet straps.  




I've attached a drawing of mine if anyone is interested.  Thanks blake255 for the inspiration.
  
Disclaimer:  If you make one from my drawing it is up to you to determine if it will support the load you intend to lift.  If your motor drops and breaks into a million pieces, I am not responsible.  Also you need to be very meticulous when attaching the straps so that they won't slip off or cause damage to the motor.

Thanks for posting Mark.  The round lower arm and the adjustable collars make your design a real winner.  I like it a lot.

I only had the ratchet straps as well...Bit of a pain they are...I had a ratchet strap stupidly put on the bottom to hold the 2 side straps from slipping off, and in the middle of sliding the motor out, realized  the ratchet wouldn't clear the frame. I had to remove that one and keep working the motor out. SO...for future reference, you might get away without the bottom straps, but I won't recommend it!!

OK just checked you post, Mark, looks like you didn't bother with the bottom one either. I guess if you make good and sure they can't slip, you're fine.

The top of my straps angle in a bit towards the center of the motor, so once the weight of the engine is on them they won't slip off.

Came on here to try and find some perfect engine stand plans for painting my 500 motor......I think this is one of the best threads I've ever seen. (sorry hondaman) I like the details about mounting to a harbor freight stand. I wasn't sure about that stand 'til I read this. Excellent designs Blake255! Simple and effective!!

I contacted some local shops and two of them asked for the .dxf file. Any chance I could get my dirty hands on that file? They also accept .jpg and .tif but no .pdf ?!?  Don't ask me how this technology stuff works........BTW Has anyone started production on these and can I buy one yet for about $30 ?  ;D

just materials enough for a couple of them 2 or 3 ...I would do it during a moment of the machine being "idle" i wouldn't mess with production time

I would be willing to pay for one too. also if you would i have another piece that needs cut, to brackets for my drag truck. if you would be interested pm me i have been trying for a year to get someone to do it. they all say it is too small to mess with.

Thanks for the post.  I built my "Hook" out of some 2x2x.125wall I had around the shop. Cut it out, tig welded it together, and painted it rustoleum hammer finish.

Works great.

I was curious if you would be willing to measure the distance from end that you mounted your second stand? I do not have my engine pulled yet but would like to go ahead and get my stand ready by mounting the second stand leg on it. Appears you have it all the way to the end of the first stand but wanted to be sure.

I would be glad to take a measurement for you, but keep in mind that my stands may be a different brand than yours.  I used the Torrin Big Red stands and they are made a little differently than the harbor freight stands.  That could affect your placement.  My suggestion is to drill slotted holes in the second stand's base so that you have some adjustment.  That is the method I was going to use, but decided, since I had the time, to mount for exact fit.

Also, I've been waiting for a couple of weeks for a quote for C-hooks.  I'm not getting any response.  I'll have the .dxf file available soon.

Great post on a very useful tool for a one person engine removal. Also like the engine stand- makes it easier than working on a table.

Any news on if these will be for sale???? Time to pull a few SOHC engines over the winter months. I'm sure it'll work well on the KZ dragbike motors i need to freshen up as well.

The original post (the very first post) has a downloadable pdf drawing. A dxf would not be difficult to produce, but would require access to Autocad (or similar). I have done a dwg (Autocad) of a slightly modified version with the top corner clipped at an angle, and I likely have a dwg that duplicates the original pdf since that was my starting point for the modified version. Pretty basic design, I think I had both versions drawn up in an evening. The modified version is untested and I would likely print the pattern and check the frame clearance before commiting to metal. I'll start digging around and see if I have both versions. To produce a dxf is a simple "save as" of the dwg from within Autocad. Let me know what you think. Of course any shared file carries the same disclaimer as the original poster in that:

I'm not an engineer and cannot vouch for the structural load capacity of the part. It would only be provided here as a potential solution and that the end user assumes all risk and responsibility of determining suitabilty for it's intended use.

Yah I downloaded the pdf, but I was hoping that since it was mentioned by the OP that he would post the file I was hoping I could just snag it. 

Any work my buddy does like this is done during his lunch break so I didn't want to inundate him with converting the pdf to a workable cad file.  He (and I) would greatly appreciate it if he had a file he could just load into his machine and let it runs its course while he eats.  I don't have a cad program so I cna't help in the conversion process.

If you don't mind I would greatly appreciate any thing you can find.
