'77 750F - Valve tick around corners...is that normal?
« on: September 13, 2009, 05:26:13 PM »
I noticed yesterday that any time I went around a corner, I heard more tick than normal, and it sounds like #1 on a right had turn and #4 on a left hand turn.  It quites down after a few seconds, so I'm assuming that it's an oil issue, and I'm not overly concerned.  I just wanted to know if it could be a sign of a failing oil pump or something else.

I did adjust the valves and cam chain this morning while everything was nice and cold.  It's still there.  Again, it doesn't bother me.  Just if it's something I can inexpensively fix now, I'd prefer to do it.

Cheers!
and Ride Safe.

are you SURE thats a valve tick? sounds more like maybe a wheel bearing going wonky. sometimes sounds can seem to be coming from a spot totally different from where it REALLY is coming from.

+1 on it may not be valve noise - and if it was, its NOT normal! Id be concerned if I wasnt getting oil to the top of the head...-easy to check by running the engine with one of the tappet covers open. It may also be exhaust leak which sounds an awful lot like valves ticking. Run the bike and look for any signs of leak at the header - maybe just needs tightened up.

Alternatively could it be your chain/front sprocket - did you also tighten your chain - is it too tight?

good luck
Andy

Sounds like oil starvation to me.
I'd pull the pan and check the pickup screen. I bet it's got loads of gunk in it.

I'm leaning towards oil starvation as well.  I will drain/check tonight.

I did check the chain, but not because I thought that was a suspect.  It was fine.  Exhaust leak would be there all the time, not just part of the time.

If it's oil starvation wouldn't your oil tank have to be empty and your oil pressure light on?

no, not necessarily.  you an have oil starvation caused by a partially blocked oil filter or pickup screen as well, or a worn oil pump that isnt delivering sufficient oil by volume or pressure, etc.
