More CB550 exhaust questions
« on: December 04, 2005, 10:56:41 PM »
Well, I got my '78 550K into the basement and up on stands. I've noticed a few more things, but I better stick with the exhaust. Two questions:

Since the bone yards are full of bikes with good head pipes and rusted mufflers, or good mufflers and rusty head pipes, does anyone make a good looking connector so that these could be cut and joined?

The guy at the counter, in the parts store that keeps my '64 Plymouth and '67 Dodge going, tells me he has a batch of '76 Super Sport parts he would like to give me a deal on. This includes an OEM 4 into 1 system. Don't know that I really care for that look, but with the factory system am I into rejetting the carbs?

Honda matched the carb tuning/jetting to the exhaust system which has it own unique requirements.   I would expect any change from the original exhaust will require some jetting or other carb adjustments for a good responsive street bike.  While the 78K carbs can be tweaked if you know what you are doing, I would expect better results by using the SS carbs and intake manifolds along with the exhaust from the SS, too.  You will lose the bar mounted choke along with this change.  The SS also has a different foot brake arm, right foot peg, kick start lever, and center stand to accomodate the 4 into 1 exhaust system.

Well, so much for the short money 4 into 1 idea. He doesn't have the whole bike, just some stuff that a roomate left behind. I kind of like the 4 pipes.
