I'm still searching for an additive that would make the proprietary brand differences less important in our choice.
The additive should reduce engine vibration, increase smoothness, maintain viscosity and protect against loss of clutch-plate friction.................If it already existed, it would probably be named.......dare I say it........dyna-oil.                       ;D

OH NO I can't believe you said that. The doodoo will hit the fan now. ;D ;D :D ;D

I have an old Kwaka 650 twin. Separate gearbox/transmission. It is used in warm climate.
The crankshaft is supported by 3" ball bearings at each end. The original oil specified was sae30 motor oil.
I've recently rebuilt the engine and replaced the bearings. I think the bearings get quite a work out from the crank. I'm currently using Castrol 20-50 (mineral) for initial running/run-in, and want to use the best oil protection I can for ongoing use.... :-\

What say you regarding your view/choice of the best type of oil available for this application?     ;) ;D

When you say you use Rotella 5W 40, and it works awesome..what does that mean ???

Have you pulled a motor apart after using it for an extended period of time?
Or do you simply mean, the motor runs & the clutch does not slip?

I can't believe I'm feeding into an oil thread, but I used Rotella 15W40 dino oil for 15000 miles on my 550, and when I pulled it apart recently (at 40000 total miles), the cases looked beautiful. No sludge, next to no film on the cases, no abnormal wear and bearings within tolerances. It's not the same oil as the synthetic 5W40, but just a vote here for Rotella. And, it's cheap!

I can tell you I use it in my turbo diesel, and have had no oil usage, or tubo failure in 175,000 miles. I use the fossil Rotella 15W40 in my bike. Too soon to tell, but it is good oil and a bit cheaper than the full synthetic.

I can't believe this attempt actually worked and people are really getting into the oil thing again!  On the plus side, though, at least we're managing to keep it relatively flame-war free so far.

And another big plus!  I'm finally being ignored by somebody!!!! ;D  I wonder who? ;)

It's me gordon. Oh wait, I'm not supposed to see what you post! :D

I have not pulled the motor apart, however my shifts are very smooth. I have no clutch slip at all. My gears do not jump and neutral is very easy to get. Engine noise is very low aside from clutch rattle and even that is quite low.
I have been using it for a few years now and it has worked very well for me. I would be willing to bet that if I had to take the engine apart, it would look very good on the inside. I may do that this winter since 33 year old seals do sometimes need to be replaced.

Put Seafoam in it, it seems to fix everything else.

Don't think seafoam in the oil is a good idea IMO.

I use GTX 10-40 Its what I have always used in bikes.

I strongly suggest a little magnesium citrate.  ANYTHING in your combustion chamber will be rapidly blown out your tail pipe.

On a serious note regarding oil.
While on my recent trip a Honda mechanic said any oil with the "SG" or "SJ" rating would never effect my clutch. I wrote it down and keep it in my wallet now.

Okay, try to follow me on this.  If you had a plane, and it was on a runway covered in Dynabeads, could it take off?
