 The son of the Sandcast's original owner came by today, he liked the look of the bike and told some stories about outrunning the state police and how his buddy and him took the engine apart to chrome the covers, so they are original. His dad had a cow.
 He rode it to high school, it was legendarily fast back then. His Mom sold it to the guy that always worked on it for $500 5-10 years ago without asking him. The second owner only kept it warm and dry and kept it at his shop. His dad sprayed the chrome with WD40 and a heavy coat of wax on the paint every fall and it was coated with oily dirt when I got it.

 I gave him the tall handlebars and red metalflake euro grips, he's going to build a tricycle for his grandson with them on it. I got a link to a photo in return.

 It's fun to find some history that surrounded me, but I didn't notice it then. His dad traded in an 850 brit bike (BSA?) with kick start. The Dad weighed about 110 soaking wet and loved the electric start on the CB's. He owned a 305 dream and a cb450 before the 850. There was a Honda mini bike bought the same day as the 750, but it's long gone. Too bad, I wanted to pair them back up.

I don't know if it's healthy or not but I read this entire thread while doing other things today. Very cool story and I'll try my best to hide a bit of jealousy.

I love how in the same breath you say you're not trying to restore it then talk about removing the rear wheel and spokes to put original style nipples on. hahahahahahaha

 I'll give you that one, the spoke nipples are in the can and will probably be there a long time. My goal is only to bolt on original parts where needed but not do a real restoration. All the paint is original except the side covers which were in pieces when I got it.
 I noticed the 4 punch marks from the recalls were punched into the rear hub instead of the engine case. I'm going to ask the guy that assembled it if that's his handiwork. He owns the second 750 that was sold here, and assembled it new also. I'd sure like to own it too, that way I could have a set of original ruby-red and blue-green. His is a 10090xx serial number diecast so that might mean mine was the only sandcast sold here. But doesn't prove it.

 The Honda mechanic was in the army by the time the recalls happened. He thought it was cool I found the punch marks on the rear hub.

 Anyway in keeping with my plan of minimal changes but do the ones needed, I removed the peeling chrome engine covers from the left side and dropped them off to be stripped. The PO's son said he chromed the parts at the same shop where they went to be stripped.
  I didn't want them buffed at the shop, I'm worried they will round off the edges and change the character lines of the original parts. The outer clutch cover and rocker cover are still chrome. I bought another sandcast rocker cover in case I ever have the engine out but since it's the best running one I have that seems unlikely.

 I went to the Davenport swap meet and bumped into a member, he asked about the Sandcast bike thread here it is, the left side engine covers are now not chromed and getting metal finished, some red scotchbrite on a wheel is a great beginning. I'm in need of a ride.

 I ended up going with the ones that came on it. The chrome hid some gnarly scrapes on one of the replacement dyno covers. Anyway I noticed some of the screws were all thread and some had a shank. I didn't really see a pattern to where they went so I just put them where they fit.
 The internal threads had some grit that I missed while cleaning so off they came and it all got washed down again. The trans cover was missing it's locating dowel, I found one, put it in but the cover didn't want to slip down over it. A minute on the sander and all is good.

 I got in a discussion on the oil line bolts, one has the phillips head. I never noticed it but my CB750 Guru said they came that way because one is difficult to get a wrench on. I never noticed before. Was this just on the early bikes?

I don't think its all of them, just the early ones. K2 and later had a special "Washer Bolt" that went in its place for easier assembly. I had no trouble getting a 1/4" ratchet 10mm deep well socket in there to torque it down properly.

It always dripped a tiny bit around the chain. While cleaning the gasket surface behind the trans cover I noticed a small chip in the gasket surface of the block. I jb welded it and so far it seems to stay dry.
 I rode it to the local abate meeting tonight, a couple guys noticed.

   Thanks Larry, that's where it is. Nice to find out it's correct. We know the engine was out due to the chrome rocker cover.
   I have the covers looking good and there's a new frame neck tag on the way for the diecast bike.  I'll post some pics when it arrives. I put a guliari style seat on the diecast, the dragbike's not using it and it looks good there.

If recent memory serves me right, then I think these are all the places

Four cylinder head positioning bolts (also have JIS + on their heads as its hard to get a standard socket in there)
Oil line bolt(s)
Oil pan bolt near that V shaped protrusion (also holds the neutral cable guide IINM)
Cam tower caps

The only place I used a turned down socket was the 12mm one on the connecting rods. That worked out great to torque down properly. The 1/4" ratchet 10mm socket worked fine without modification for all the above. The 3/8" ratchet one most definitely did not.

The neck tag for the diecast is a decal, only they sent 4 of them. I didn't read the fine print closely. I'll stick it to a trophy tag and mount it with the rivets.
The sandcast's dechromed covers leak oil, so far It's not cured. hmmm.  I also own a shaved down 10mm socket.
 I put the drag bike up on the overhead shelf, It's strapped to a block of wood so it won't tip. pictures coming.

 The two 400F's get the handlebars and controls swapped, one 400f gets K0 bars again and my diecast 750 gets a set of 400F bars. One set of bars are repro and one set honda so it looks like a 4 bike handlebar swap. At least they have all been off recently.

 The sandcast trans cover didn't have a dowell in the shift shaft location. I put one in but neglected to check the side cover hole. The dowell didn't fit into the hole and would not allow the cover to seal. Dowell hole drilled out, (deburred) now it fits, problem hopefully solved.

The K0's are mostly unchanged except for getting new bike covers. The hot rod bike is in the enclosed trailer for storage and the sandy is in the heated shop. I've already ridden it this year. The gas stored better with the stabil 360 and 2 stroke oil in it.
 I did find a nice sunrise orange tank beautiful inside and decent but not perfect paint. I might drop it on the hot rod for a while.

No, but he was very interested. My 4 year old granddaughter was here, earlier she told her mom about  the big brown truck, it brings Papa's cycle tools. It came today and she was here to help open the box. When her dad came to pick her up she said she couldn't go because we were going to work in the shop. Lol. I had to promise to let her help next time.


Haha!  Don, you are raising her right while she is there with you.  I love it. She will be an engineer or gearhead to have as a hobby and leave work to something she can leave at work.


Time for a bike with the sidecar and roll cage in the side car to keep her safe to put the grandma and her mom & dad's concern at bay...

  She's almost 5 now and helped swap the seats on James K4 before it goes to England.  She has her own guitar at my house, her and her little sister like to help me play. We're going to work on their Aunt's drag car tomorrow that should be fun.

 EDIT,  I kept James K4 and sold it later, it stayed in the US..

The diecast spent winter in the trailer in storage, it's still got good battery. I'm excited to ride it this year with the K4 hot rod motor.
 There's an engine case for sale on ebay but it's about 550 numbers older than this one. (1014100) if it was that close and  newer I'd probably buy it and begin building a numbers appropriate stocker engine. I have a 103xxxx engine that would donate it's parts and some pieces from an earlier 101xxxx but no crankcase.

 In 1970 my brother rode a cl450 converted to street use with a hooker header and street tires. He worked at the local Oldsmobile garage and the lube tech knew a guy with an new  750. On one occasion the 750 guy rode in for a visit and the lube tech told my brother to come out and see the new Honda 4 cylinder, He remembers seeing it several times and wanted one, it was 74 before he got his. It turns out the 750 is the sandcast I own now. The lube tech (Duke) and the original owner (Gene) of my bike were buddies.
