Cold Turkey - Coffee
« on: October 01, 2009, 06:59:52 AM »
So, in an attempt to make my life as miserable as possible I decided to go cold turkey on caffeine starting last Saturday.  Thursday and Friday I had cut my usual ~6 cups to 3-4 but kicked it completely as of Saturday (at least for the next several weeks / months).  Reading up on some health issue the wife and I are dealing with and it seems there are mixed opinions as to how much coffee can play a role so we're taking the "eliminate a potential cause" route.

I've had a headache for a week solid but it's starting to get a little more manageable.  I do not recommend this approach to anyone wishing to rid themselves of the delicious nectar that is coffee.  If you must remove such a wonderful liquid from your repertoire of suitable beverages do so slowly.  Maybe take a year or two to gradually ween yourself.

Also, alcohol hit the skids a few weeks back so my glass of wine a night and a few beers playing poker about once every other month are out as well.  Next thing you'll know I'll find out that gummie bears are bad for me.  That would just about do me in...

Best of luck with the Detox

It sucks for the first bit, but you'll find once the headaches go away, life is good......

I'm addicted to Diet Dr. pepper. I give myself an allotted amount per week, if I stay under it, great. I actually use coffee as a substitute. lol.
Best of luck.

Jesus, no coffee- I'll put you out of your misery for a reduced rate- since I feel sorry for you.

No caffeine, what vices have you left?

Coffee, in moderation, has been shown to be beneficial.

It all depends on your specific problem. I recall from your last post its a reproductive problem and its associated with sperm. If its a motility issue then caffeine is beneficial according to most reports. If its a morphoogy issue the you might want to consider intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) which can help fertilize the egg by injecting the sperm directly into the egg. This is the most successful procedure - more so than IVF. No amount of caffeine or lack of will alter the success rate in this case.

If the problem is neither of these then still consider ICSI -my medical colleagues rate this highly.

cheers
Andy

if youre trying to get off of caffeine make sure you read the labels of any pain relievers you buy, there are several otc pain relievers that have loads of caffeine in them. same thing with some cold remedies i think.

I was an 8 cup a day man and I had to go cold turkey. The headaches are a given, the other problem I found is that no matter how much I slept I was always tired. I was was so jacked on caffine for so long, my body had to readjust. I stayed away from it for 20 years and I went back to two cups a day at work 3 years ago and none on the weekends.

i very rarely use caffiene and if i do it has to be before noon or i'm up all night. i was drinking 2 or 3 pots of coffee in a day at one point when i was driving a truck OTR and it took me 6 months to get over the headaches and the tiredness.

First of all, I believe that you are the guy at the edge of the high cliff who is told by someone that all his problems are altitude related, so he jumps off to eliminate that problem.  If you just cut back to a moderate level, you will find that you will probably feel a lot better. It has been shown that moderate consumption of red wine is actually very good for you. There are studies that show moderate coffee drinkers have a lower chance for certain cancers. The list goes on......only have this to say.....If it rules you and your daily life and you feel you can't live without it.....then it is bad for you.  If you enjoy it but can live without it and can give it up without it being a big deal......then it probably won't hurt you unless you have been diagnosed with a medical problem that is being aggravated by it. IMHO :)

That's the kicker.  I know that the moderation thing is good as a general rule and am not making a permanent change (other than cutting back the coffee to a more reasonable level but right now have to try and eliminate ANY potential contributors to the problem.  The majority of research I've read and professionals I've talked to have said that a glass of wine a night and drinking coffee won't make a difference but there are a few that have claimed that there is a link.  I know I'm grasping at straws but it's not something that can be detrimental in the long run (unless I go insane from the headaches which are still kicking my ass).

I forgot to mention that I had done this before, for different reasons.  Used to drink 1/2 before I went to work then brew a pot and drink that at the office.  That was several years ago and I didn't have near the headaches that I am getting this time.  Guess getting older makes things feel a little worse and last a little longer...

Sounds like the guy who NEVER drank alcohol, smoked cigarettes, chased women, swore, or stayed out late. He lived to be 100. Everyone asked him why would he want to live that long without any of life's pleasures.  Total waste of a lifetime IMHO

I don't think I'll ever go without coffee.
Just seems to harsh, but like I always tell my kids:

Even, well you know, coffee.
