In the early 80's it was about $3K to get a Private pilot's license. It is about double that today, but the value of the dollar is about half what it was then, too.

The amount it cost depends greatly on the individual. If you fly every day, you learn much faster than if you fly once a month. Also, individuals often learn at different rates. If you have never developed a rapport with any type of machinery, it is going to take longer, usually. It is often true that the younger you are, the faster your learning rate.
But, you don't really need to get the the full private license to get over the fear of flying.
There is also the Sport pilot license to consider.
