I cut into the steering stem
« on: October 14, 2009, 04:20:06 PM »
Couldn't get the bottom race off of the steering stem any other way so I got out the Dremel.

I cut through the race and into the stem before I was aware of what I had done.

Can I still use the steering stem or because I cut into it is it structurally defecient. Don't know if you can tell from the photo but the cut is 1/2" wide and in the middle of the cut. There is one micro area that went all the way through to the center of the stem.

That;s the bad news, the good news is that I got the darn race off.

Of all God's creatures there is only one that cannot be made the slave of the lash. That one is the cat. If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat.

gonna be pricey to properly prep/weld repair, then turn to the desired OD, but I would do that or maybe check the "parts for sale" section.  what is left of my brain cells think the bending (coupled with some torsion) loads are relatively high there.

It's off of a 1975 CB550 K1.

If someone has one laying around I would be glad to buy. I think this is a high stress point and would rather be safe about this.

Thanks.
