Long time between posts but I did manage to get some work done today. I'm going to take the sandcast motor out of the K0 frame and put in the correct die cast. This involves getting another set of carbs ready for the motors. I had some given to me (without the slides and tops though) that were painted with black crinkle paint which I was able to remove with aircraft aluminium paint remover but they were still very dark. So, following the soda blasting threads I jumped in and blasted them. They came up nice, I did use a bit of metal cleaner on one and I think is too shiny so I'll reduce the shine a bit. Here's the before, after paint remover and after blasting. I think with a bit more tlc they will great. So god in fact I think I'll do another set I have that jneuf was kind enough to sell me.

Greggo, right after I finish the K0 however I now have friends with 750's that want me help them out a bit, which is all good, so it may be ready for next summer. I should look good on it, all 6'3" and 220 pounds.  ;D

Carb rack assembled and looks good. I polished the carb tops and the bowls so maybe they are too shiny now. I touched one carb body up a bit with metal polish but don't like it so I'll have to dull it down a bit. In the bottom photo are a set of carbs that were just cleaned up (from jneuf) and look like the stock ones may have new.

These are the carbs on the sandcast engine. I think I'll give them a soda blast too to see if they lighten up a bit in colour. And I am NOT a carb hoader, I just like them that's all.  ;D

You're way ahead of me although I do have a set of  K1 and F model carbs too plus a box of bits and pieces. Can't help myself! Cliff.

Well, let's see.  I've got two completely disassembled sets of CB500/550 carbs, as well as the original 627B's on my '71, two CA95 carbs, and three sets (two early, one PD) sets of 750 carbs.  I just can't say no to good deals on carbs. 

Let's see a pic of that C95   8)

The last plate on it was a 1967 Alberta plate, the bike was used as a dirt bike. The previous owner brought it into the country in the mid 1960's. I heard about it at a party and the owner had passed away, his daughter gave it to me on the understanding that I would bring it back to life some day. 754 got it and stored it for me until I could get to his place to collect it. How's that for a buddy?  Cliff.

Long time between posts dammit, but it is coming along. I have decided to pull the sandcast motor and put the correct motor back in where it belongs. The sandcast will be on a display stand for now. The die cast will go in as soon as the covers are shiny again.

Do you spray it with clear coat after that?  I'm about to paint my bike with the same paint.  I also bought primer for it which a lot of people don't use.  I can't see it doing any harm but the clear coat I'm not sure about.

No, I haven't clear coated it and didn't use primer first. The paint seems to stick well and not turning colour at all. I did scrub everything until I was sure they were clean and then did it once more. The paint was put on with several light coats. I've read that if it's put on too thick that you could have cooling problems.
Splilt gas has not affected it either. It goes on nice and easy as you'll find out.

Picked up the covers and kick starter from the polisher/platers today. Now to clean the polishing residue out, install the seals, tach drive and o-rings and start putting them on. The polisher was able to take a couple of shallow divots out too. I think I'll put some old covers on the dyno and clutch for the install because they will have to come off again so I can tighten the bolt for the magnet and the clutch centre once I can hold them from moving with the rear brake. Ever feel like the motor or bike is fighting back? It sure did tonight. Almost every screw felt tight going in, the gaskets were not fitting well and it was just frustrating. I got a bit more done but didn't feel good about it. Could be hearing the news about a past client killing himself on Saturday put me in a pensive, dark mood.

More done: wrapped the frame in bicycle tube and bubble wrap, "built" a 10" high stand as Hondaman suggest, modelled by Simon the wonder dog. All the bits laid out and waiting to return to their proper places. Hopefully do the swap on the weekend, running next week. Cliff.

Engine swap time. Invited my friend Terry over to help, re-read Hondaman's instructions and went at it. The sandcast motor came out like a champ, the diecast slipped it like it wanted to be there. It was back home.
All is not sweetness and light though, I put a nice scratch in my newly polished dyno cover and while installing the carbs, turned away for a second to reach for a rag and they dropped just enough to put a ding in the starter cover. Damn. Plus a few more chips in the frame paint. Just another day in a Magpie build.
Lesson learned. Listen to that little voice that says do this before you do that. The voice told me to take the starter cover off before working on the carbs. I didn't listen and now am pissed at myself. This is fun but not every day. These bikes fight back sometimes. It will be worth it in the end though! Cliff.

Points gapped, timing set with a continuity light, carbs installed and balanced, dyno cover re-polished and installed along with the shifter and sprocket cover. Put the battery in and it turns over nicely on the starter. The oil light doesn't come on, the wiring is connected and the bulb good. The light does not always come on my K1's until the motors been run a bit, maybe they reset themselves? Oil in. Just need to install a set of old pipes I have and connect the portable gas tank.
Didn't break or scratch anything. ::)
