Just lost my job.....
« on: October 17, 2009, 08:25:47 AM »
....for the 2nd time in less than 2 years.  >:( :'( :-\ Same company, same position.  The bean counters never look at how a position (I design Building Control Systems) can contribute to a long, large detailed project (new VA Medical Center in North Las Vegas) but simply how it effects the bottom line vs. revenue, and who's the newest on the payroll.  So now I'm jobless and Johnson Controls does not have a qualified Systems Engineer in the West Region.

In the near future I might need to sell my wifes '81 CB650C.  It comes with both '79 and '81 engines, replacement cases for the '81 engine, and sets of '79 and '81 wheels.  It's in Las Vegas.

Sorry man. I'm in the same position. Laid off last October, hired back in November and then laid off again Oct 1. Not sure what the thinking is behind that other than a desperate attempt to keep the company above the waterline.

Rough year out there overall. Good luck to you and everyone else within earshot under similar conditions.

Don't sell the bike unless you absolutely have to  :'(

Sure hate to hear that. Hope you all can work something out and not have to start selling things off. That is so distressing. Had some pretty good ups and downs over the years, because of expenses and such. Life can be REALLY rough sometimes. I Pray thaty you all will pull through okay.  ;)

ksirr,

I applied for a local Project Engineer job at Johnson Controls over 10 years ago. Went through all the motions and even interviewed at the regional HQ. They finally decided to hire a young man who just graduated from a 3rd class college for much less money. So the position wasn't important to them, but the price they wanted to pay for the position was...

Last I heard a few days ago was the the Repubs are holding it up.  At this point it is more an issue of where the money will come from.  I think the Repubs want it to come from the Stimulis money and the Dems want it to from somewhere else I don't remember.  It will most likely go through after that is worked out.

Hey guys, thanks for the encouragement and the humor.

I wish my situation was simple, like srust.  I have 6 kids: 4 boys from a previous marrage, my current wife has a son and we have a daughter.  My wife a daughter live in Santa Ana CA (my wife works in Irvine) while I live and worked in Las Vegas.  So now, to save on daycare expenses, Sarah (daughter) is going back to Las Vegas with me on Tuesday.  And, I will also need to contact Child Support Services to request a reduction of my child support/alimony.

I do have ideas for self employment: Rebuilding SOHC4 carbs (I actually like doing it, to a point),
Modifying Guitars (electronics), CAD work, Furniture design, etc....or maybe I should stand on the corner with a sign "will tune feedback control loops for food".

If I end up selling the CB650, I'll still have my CB350F.

I moved to Nacogdoches TX from Phoenix Az to work in the *ahem* Harley shop here. 6 mo later I was out of a job. Luckily I fell back on the old job(since high school) and started @ a lube shop here in town. Now I am the Asst Mgr, so the pay is getting close to where I was at at the Harley shop. Sometimes you got to get out there and do what you have to. It definitely isnt what I love to do, but it does allow me to keep my old girl running, which is enough. For now.

I think you may need to relocate Vegas is going through a rough time. Having said that I would start looking at Transit systems. Subways, Metros etc. There is money being pumped into infrastructure now. There is a talent problem in the Industry. Today, they are moving toward Automatic Train Control and Signaling. A lot of people in Signaling are old school with relays and mechanical switches, today it is software driven and even wireless. Also many Transit Systems like the MTA in NY is looking at a 60% retirement rate over the next 4 years so they are backfilling rapidly. They usually have good benefits and retirement plans. There are others all over the US having the same problem.

I relocated from So. Calif. to Vegas due to the jobs drying up in Calif.

ATCS has been around awhile (since the '80's I think) and you are probably right in that the railroads are pushing to fully automate the system in order to be more efficient.

I retired from IBM after 30 years and that is now considered a long run. Back in the day you found a good job and held it. Today you start looking for another job the day you start a new one.

The move to ATCS is really escalating since the newest Trains are really a rolling network coupled to each other to make one big network. Everything is under microprocessor control. When we deliver new cars to a aged fleet the Train Operators look at me in horror when I tell them the control handle is nothing more than a joystick.

The industry is changing quickly, check it out.

Sorry to hear about the job. It's going around. Our neighbor lost his job early in the spring. His wife lost hers from the plant closing a few weeks ago. BUT... he got an offer as a logging foreman that same week and they put forth much of their savings and are moving about 3 hrs south to the job. It's a better place to live, nice little town,... everything worked out great and just in time. Then... 3 days into the new job, in the middle of his wife packing everything up back here, his boss laid off everyone but 1 guy. That guy is in a cast and can't even work right now. He just decided he didn't like people's attitudes and thought they were too emotional. WTF???
We helped them finish moving anyway. Since they were gonna be on unemployment anyway, they may as well live in a better, cheaper area while looking.

Good luck to all who are unemployed right now.  :(

I know this is a bit flip ( I've been out of work many times) but there are opportunities out there, for instance there jobs for translators of Glascow English to standard English, apparently outside business people don't understand whats being said and the translators have to attend all the business meetings and explain to their clients whats being said, ( sounds like a jammy go to me) Which means all those business lunch's in the pub and clean clothes, plus get paid for it.

I know I see a lot of part time and per diem jobs around here, just not many full time. A lady I used to work with cobbled together 3 of these and ended up with the equivalent of full time hours plus some. No insurance though but many full timers don't have any either so... Part time and per diem jobs tend to pay a bit more per hour than the fulltime because of no benefits. Just a thought.
