Ideas for a GPZ550 cafe racer
« on: October 26, 2009, 10:28:20 PM »
I have an '84 GPZ 550 in the back yard.  I think it runs, cleaned the carbs and then stopped working on it to take my CB550 apart.

The GPZ needs a lot to make it cosmetically pleasing.  Instead of getting it back to the stock look I'm thinking about making a cafe racer with steel rear fender, small tail light, etc.  Maybe ditch the half fairing and put a round headlight.

Anybody done something like this and have pictures?  I've been looking on the internet, haven't found much so far.

Thanks, Mike

The Kawi 550 motor is a mini powerhouise in GPz or KZ form.
I would detail the bike and work on bringing it back to give you time to source parts, before you hack it up.
The '84 with its half fairing is a bike that can go anywhere!
But Hawaii(?) may have taken its toll on it...

The picture helps, thanks!  I've seen some GPZ's in good condition for around $1,500.  It's just not worth it to repaint everything (bodywork, frame and engine) to make this bike look new.  I think I'll make a cafe style bike or sell it if something else good comes along.

Well it looks like I have it sold.  Got it running, washed it and put it on CL.  A guy gave me some cash tonight and he says he'll be back tomorrow with the rest.

Just watched Mad Max the other night and was thinking about painting it that silver with blue transition and then putting MFP on the sides of the fairing.

Anyways, I have other plans.  First is to put my CB550 back together!

Well I sold it tonight so on to finishing up the CB550.

Also might make a decision on ZRX vs. XS650.  Gotta see if either bike is still for sale.
