This site has been an immeasurable help for my efforts to keep my '76 750 running strong. My squeaky brake was driving me crazy and, when it started getting soft, I decided to rebuild it, and replace the line with a SS braided one.
I bought a m/c rebuild kit ($55) and a caliper seal ($5) from the dealer and off I went. The m/c was challenging, but it's what I expected considering the numerous posts here detailing the project. Before the project, the m/c would drip all over the backside of the brake lever which would them fly up and hit/stain my sleeve and shoulder. The rebuild kit stopped that
The caliper was no problem either (I just followed the popular steps from this site), until I tried to remove my bleeder valve. The damm thing was rusted in there pretty tight. My first serious attempt to remove the valve was heating the caliper with a torch and hitting a vise grip pliers attached to the valve. This got the valve out, but the rust on the valve stripped out the hole on its way out. I decided to buy a new (larger) valve kit ($7) from NAPA, which worked perfect. All I had to do was drill the hole, tap it once, then grind down my tap and tap it again (bottoming taps were tough to find, and only came in expensive kits).
The system went back together smoothly, and now, with all the new parts, and caliper grease, the squeak is gone!
