Changed the oil in the K5. The harvest Classic is next week!
Drained the oil, didn't spill a drop. Not even on the Kerker. Yay, I'm so clever.....
Checked the old oil for sparklies, found only the "normal" amount. (Very few.)
Then I decided to finally try one of those neat-O keen chrome spin-on filters with the adapter I bought last year.
Spun it on, hey this is easy! Tightened it down like every other spin-oil filter I've installed over the last ~35 years.
Filled the bike with fresh 20-50 Castrol T4, spun the starter a bit, then started the bike.
Fifteen seconds later the o-ring seal on the chrome filter blew out and spewed oil all over the Kerker and the floor!
Talk about instant rejection from the K5!
Ok, fine, that's the end of that experiment. Perhaps I'll approach it again later but for today it's back to stock.
For Terry's amusement I will quote him here:
Ha ha, I've had a box full of those big crappy chrome spin on filters and have used them on and off for years, I put one on, it leaks, I take it off and replace it with a better "brand name" filter, then a year or two later I forget and put another one on, it leaks, I take it off, and so on and so forth. If you can get one that doesn't leak, use it by all means! Cheers, Terry.
I can't say I wasn't warned. Now, off to wash the beast so it's shiny for next week. ....And clean up the oil from the shop floor. At least it's clean oil.
*sigh*
