Today I decided that the "H Box", on my CX500 which connects the headers underneath the engine, but also works like an additional muffler, and doesn't work well with the 34mm Mikuni carb mod, is history, and I removed it. I replaced it with some 1 3/4" exhaust tubing. It doesn't look like I had to do much, but in fact it was a PITA, why did Honda decide to use 2 different OD tubes at either end of the "H Box"?
Anyway, armed with some straight tube and a couple of 22.5 degree bends, I was able to make two centre sections to link the stock header to the stock mufflers that I "ventilated" last week. I do have some nice aftermarket reverse cone megaphones coming, probably next week, but I couldn't wait any longer, and the new mufflers will work with my setup, when they arrive.
I took it for a 70 mile ride, and what a revelation, as Larry unkindly opined a week or two ago, a stock CX/GL500 is a bit of a slug, but with the Mikunis and a freer flowing exhaust system, it now flies! It has a really light throttle, instant throttle response, and clean acceleration right up to the 9750 RPM redline. I had a ball, and it was only when I decided that I needed an icy cold beer that I decided to turn for home. All in all, a great day! Cheers, Terry.
