Ideally, you would remove the springs and then raise the wheel till it hits the shock bumper. If the tire contacts something else before hand, not so good. If so and you run those shocks, you willl sooner or later, bottom (top) out the tire with interesting results. Remember that as a tire hits a bump or chuckhole they tend to squish at the impact and balloon at the other side.

This comes from first hand knowledge BTW. Take care.

I tore my 550 down to almost the bare frame today.

Do you have a project thread yet to post your progress? I like the 550 threads.

Bike looks great Rad

I like the later swingarm used as the lower part of the hard tail

Ive known people that called doing that a hack job. "No real talent involved" theyd say. I however always was a fan of doing a hard tail that way.

Bike looks bad ass though. Very well done

I would always wonder why guys didn't use the swingarm as the lower member before I saw pics of people doing it. I wouldn't consider it a hack job because it really just makes a lot of sense. Takes care of chain adjustments and rear axle fitment. Aside from good welds and a very basic understanding of angles it isn't hard to triangulate a rear for a hard tail so "no talent" is in the eye of the beholder I suppose

The old original choke cable was bound up and sticking badly, so I put a new Motion Pro in today. Works like a charm!

I brought home another one............... ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

G'Day Eric, yeah mate, I took it for a ride around the block (not registered yet) and it goes great. The PO restored it for his brother, but his brother is a dirt bike guy and didn't want it, so he put it on EBay. He's done a cosmetic resto, and it appears to be good mechanically, but I'll still need to do a few little things to make it perfect. (or at least, perfect enough for me............) Cheers, Terry. ;D

I remember when those first came out.  They revealed that BMW can make mistakes!  On side stand oil would leak into the combustion chambers resulting in a very smokey start up.  Then people who rode in the rain discovered that when they opened the gas cap a cup of water would be dumped into the tank.  They soon sorted those issues, but it turned out that people still wanted the twins...

That will make for an intersting change from the GL Terry. At least with the FI K100 you don't have to worry about carb issues.

Fired up my Gl500 for the first time this spring. It idles suprisingly well for only running on 1 cylinder. Now I know what I am working on tomorrow after work.

Pulled 4 exhaust studs from the head on the stuck 550 motor and installed them to replace the missing studs in the non-stuck motor.

I think I am also going to have to repalce one of the existing studs in the good motor. The threads at the end are pretty buggered up and I couldn't get a die on it to clean it up.

Thanks mate, this is my third "K". As you've mentioned, BMW fixed all those "problems" (not that they were ever really a problem) very early in the evolution of the K bikes, and having owned 3 "R" series BMW's as well, (R69S, R100RS x 2) I'd much rather own a K than an R. I haven't owned a "new" Boxer though, but I've ridden a few, and they are a beautiful engine, probably the best engineered engine in any modern European motorcycle. I might have to add one to the herd............. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I don't have any carb issues on my 'Wang Danny, although I'm stil not sure the electrical system is 100%.............. ;D

What do you mean by that Steve? "Horses for courses" mate, just like Z1's are wonderful bikes for going fast in a straight line, 'Wang's are wonderful cross-country mile eaters. I love all my bikes, equally.............. ;D

...hand full of original parts arrived today that I scored last week  ;D

I drove a K1100RS (flying brick) and it was build from ~1992-1997. Terry's  K100 was the model before and it was build from 1983-1989 and
in 1989 came the K100 RS 4V.
