You mean that you have the cam chain over the cam sprocket, but when you rotate the crank by hand the chain doesn't move? Of can you not rotate the crank?

Assuming the cam chain is on the sprocket correctly and the sprct is on the cam... do you have spark plugs in it? you should not, makes it real hard to turn with the crank nut.

Got the '78 CB550K to the "try to run it" phase: plugs gapped and installed, set up tank next to bike with some fresh gas, clear tube float level test and fix level for carbs 1 & 4 (lucky that only the outside carbs needed changes: did it on the bike).

Tried to start it: turned over nicely but no luck. Goosed it with a little starter fluid into the air cleaner and bam, runs like a kitten. Going to check the pilot screw setup tomorrow and see if that helps. When we got the bike it took a ton of starter fluid to get her going so definitely much better, but we don't want to have to spray it every time. We were hoping to avoid a carb rebuild this season so any ideas out there short of that? We've got new coils and NGK D7EV plugs, new OEM ignition plate, careful static timing and valve clearances. I'll do the timing light and dwell tomorrow but with static timing spot on that shouldn't affect starting. Of course I'm using full choke on the cold starts. Cranking speed is great (new AGM battery). My only idea short of pulling the carbs is to see if I can find a vacuum leak by spraying a little starter fluid around the boots once it is idling, but the boots look good and I tightened all their collars. We don't have a good MC compression or leak-down tester yet, but if it runs great when warm that doesn't seem a likely cause of cold-blooded startup.

Anyway, on the whole a good day. After a long winter of restoration work we have a smart looking machine that runs and makes a sweet exhaust purr! Having a celebratory beer and calling it a night.

I burnt the darn starter relay up trying to get this 750 going.

I released the smoke from it, now,  all it does is click.    Sh1t!!!!!

Gonna have to start from scratch and go thru all the systems, to figure out why it won't start and run.

generally a click means it is working. Have you tried shorting across the terminals with a screwdriver to see if the starter spins?

Installed a Hondaman ignition box into the old girl last night.
After a quick and painless install the bike...the bike feels more alive!
Better idle, quicker throttle response and smoother  8)

Worth every penny!
Also adjusted my front brake so it isnt dragging  :-[

Struggled with sticky throttle on my cb400f
Cables off bike move freely, lubed them. Put them on bike, checked them before connecting to carbs, smooth and free movement. Carbs snap back fast and strong.

The moment I hook up to carbs, throttle doesn’t go back. Routed cables as lined in manual.

Did it about four times, no luck then I undid push cable and only with pull cable it works perfect. Went for a short ride with just pull cable hooked up, ran beautifully except it was chilly

Can’t figure out what’s wrong ?

Have you made sure the throttle sleeve is not binding on the handlebar?

Checked that half dozen times
With switch
Without switch
With cables
Without cables
It’s the push cable that sticks but on its own it moves very easy and smooth

If it is a new cable check if the lug on the end isn't rubbing on the throttle housing (too wide). If it sticks out farther than the width of the throttle tube or if the cable is off center to the lug, that could cause the bind.

It released a lot of smoke and the wires were hot as crap.

Yes, I did jump it, and failed.

Did not spin the starter, just a small spark.

resurrecting a '78 550k, yesterday's progress was clearing brake lines from sludge, new brake fluid, then test ride. Front brake actuates but does not easily return to free state, so either piston is getting stuck or the pads aren't sliding back into position. Time to take it all apart.

Also pulled the float bowl drain screws to replace the orings. One of the bowls is also leaking from the drain plug, so need to see if it's a cracked tube or something else. It's not the valve as verified by clear tube.

In mine this was caused by the 2nd, "return", hole in the master cylinder reservoir being completely blocked. Had to get a tiny drill bit to open it up.

Did you do this with the fluid still in, or was it empty?

And second, you mean there's 2 holes in the cylinder?
