Finally finishing my motor. It looks beautiful except the tranny cover is chrome, and pitted. All the other covers are like liquid mirrors thanks to a polishing kit and a lot of patience. I looked like a chimney sweep for a week

However, I tried sanding off the chrome on my tranny cover. Took forever. The internet told me to put it in an acid bath of muriatic acid. I did that. I then got distracted polishing and when I came back I didn’t have a tranny cover anymore. Just boiling, frothing black acid.

Oh well

I have a raw aluminum replacement on the way from eBay already. Lesson learned!

Wow, yeah, don't do that. You'll just end up with hydrogen...
Best not to go near any aluminum with any kind of acid.

Got the bike all tuned up and ready for good riding weather, then noticed some cracks in the tire sidewalls. New Tires mounted and ready to go. Feels good to ride this bike again!

Received and polished new transmission cover and installed all covers w new gaskets. It looks amazing. I’m going to tidy up a little so y’all don’t think I’m a slob and then take a picture

Yesterday was lovely out so I prepped, painted and baked a bunch of pieces inc. engine mount brackets, fork lowers, center stand, side stand, calipers, swing arm, rear brake bracket.

We are now in the reassembly phase :) so I’m just putting things back on now which is psychologically the easiest part of the project.

The aim is to get back to a rolling chassis this week. I have all my tapered bearings ready for the lower triple tree to finish curing. All my wheel bearings are laid out with their corresponding retainers etc. Just got to borrow my friend’s restaurant oven tomorrow to bake the wheels.

Hopefully y’all approve of my work

Thanks friends. I just reassembled the left fork. The right fork upper will not slide past the fork seal  into the lower. I gave it a tap to encourage it and it’s now stuck enough that I can’t pull it out without a vise and a friend. Once I get it out does anyone have any ideas why it might be jammed? I put the oil seal and snap ring in place before I slid the upper in on both forks. Is there a chance that the uppers and lowers mates over time and I’ve got the left one in the right one? Could that cause a jam? Uppers are in very good shape.

Well

I took it over to my buddy’s and put the upper in the vise w some sacrificial wood. Then I twist-pulled the lower off and inspected. It wa filthy - I’d forgotten to clean the inside of this one, like an idiot. So I cleaned it out and applied a little fork oil and it went together like soft serve ice cream and hot fudge.

Put the forks in the trees just to look at it really. I’m waiting for the wheels to cure so I can put the tires on and have a rolling chassis. I might start making the seat out of fiberglass tomorrow

Looks fantastic.  Approved!   I see a future BOTM there....

So, if that hypothetically ever happened, it would be the most validating experience of my life. Which is weird, because I don’t know any of you. But I do want to say, it only looks the way it does because of you folks on this forum - as always, very grateful and very aware that I’m a CB novice. The whole engine would be satin black if BenelliSEI hadn’t posted pictures of his bike and made me INSANELY jealous

How did you get your engine covers so shiny?

I'm gonna say hours and hours of sanding and polishing...
Sometimes it is better to go to someone who polishes for a living as the aluminum dust created from sanding and polishing is really really not good for your long term health. Polishing is an addiction. Once you start it is hard to stop... Then when you push aluminum to a high luster you are going to have to do something about the paint on the tank and side covers and if the frame is a detractor then it has to come up too, then any plastics or bolts or any number of other things, including the wheels and spokes...
Slippery slope, very slippery slope...

Gave the bike a nice bath today.  Had the carbs off at least 15 times trying different Jets  and cleaning etc.  All to come to the conclusion that the stock 35 pilots and 105 mains work the best.  Once warm it runs excellent and just have to accept the cold blooded nature.

Luckily no leaks yet but only 300 miles since rebuild.  They will probably start once I get over 500 which should be soon.  I must admit I just love looking at all the incredible bikes on this forum and reading all the trouble shooting and tips.  Absolutely invaluable.

majorzozo, that thing is just plain gorgeous!  I own a 78F that needs to get restored, so I understand they present some unique challenges.  Yours really looks great!  Awesome job!

You can check out my old project thread.  The thread ends in 2016 when I basically wore out the valve guides to the point that it smoked like a 2 stroke and was using a quart of oil in a couple hundred miles.  I need to get back to work on it.

Seanbarney, good thread.  I cruise this site alot and never ran across yours.  Wish I had.  Looks like you have a good project to start with.  I have been accumulating a few spare parts so feel free to PM me if you hit a jam.  Not that many but you never know.  Good luck.
