Question on pronunciation?
« on: November 10, 2009, 08:38:06 AM »
This is question for my American friends:

In the UK when talking about a Kawasaki Z1 we pronounce it “Zed one”. I the US would you call it a “Zee one”.

No reason really, I’m just interested. ;D

In the UK it's like you have a different word for everything!
I mean a boot is what goes on your foot and a bonnet goes on your head!

Gear fab! :)

If there were any logic to it, you Brits would also pronounce the letter "T" as "Ted", among others. ;D

Yes, but then..., why isn't it pronounced "hed-erb"?

Ged-od Sed-ave Ted-he qued-een.

In the US we have something similar used by young school girls called pig latin.  Which the above phrase would be:
Odgay Avesay Ethay Eenquay.

I suspect the young school girls were just a little too familiar with foreign (perhaps roman) pigs.

In Pulp Fuction I dont suppose it would have sounded the same if Bruce Willis said "Zeds dead"  with the American Zee pronunciation ;)....so zed one sounds perfectly normal to me for a Z1000  ;D

In America if at a bar just dont say 'Im going to smoke a fag" and you`ll be ok  8)....especially in Texas....

Z-1 is pronounce exactly the way it is spelled. ;D

I always wondered where the "Zed" came from though. Alot of the people on the KZ sites call their KZ's "Zed1000" etc. I never heard them call their bikes a "K-Zed1000" though.

I guess its a European thing...

Pulp Fiction and old british comedies did it for me.

However, I'm enough of a geek that it was the Stargate shows with their Canadians that really did it.  They had power cells known as Zero Point Modules, or ZedPMs.

The actual reason is that after the Revolution we were isolated from England. No books or other materials came here. One man named Naoh Webster and some other scholars got togeher and published a Dictionary on their own authority. Sometimes they used the most common mispellings and made them standard, or they streamlined words like programme and colour, where the extra letters served no purpose.

At the University level either spelling is considered correct. The American dialect is now officially recognized.

But we were boys, and boys will be boys, and so they will. To us, everything was dangerous, but what of that? Had we not been made to live forever?
