I need a cam, but which cam......??
« on: November 14, 2009, 04:57:40 pm »
I recently bought a K2 CB750 for a resto project. The previous owner inherited it from a customer who wanted it to look like a harley >:( He started to do engine work for the guy then the money dried up. 25 Years later is where I come in. The engine has been bored out to an 836 and I am yet to retrieve a cam for it. (Lost in the ages)

My question is will a std cam leave the engine usable/smoothe with little or no other work to head? If I must use another cam are there any mild enough that wont require new springs and retainers but still improve ridabilty?

i wouldnt run a stock cam with an 836, it will allow too high of a static compression. go for a mild one from megacycle or webcam maybe

So are you suggesting a cam with slightly longer duration but std lift?
Would I be mad not to port the head..?

more duration AND lift, if you can afford to have it done then yes, have it ported. sohc member MRieck is a wizard with these heads, he can also recommend a specific cam for you too.

Not sure that i can justify sending my head to the states for a port job (read many of the posts and it seems he is highly regarded though :-\)May need to find a guy in Oz.

My only concern with going for a cam with higher lift is the need for new springs, retainers, beefed up primary etc.....I am not really after power (Have another bike for that) I just want to make the 836 engine that I ended up with rideable with no annoying flat spots.
I would consider doing more to the engine at a later date but for now have to spend most of the finances on the frame, wheels and tank.

After reading many of the posts it seem the engine can be a bottomless pit for the brave and deep pocketed.. :D

If you don't have a cam already then you might as well go aftermarket .I don't think you can get a new Honda cam anyways . I have a webcam #41 and although the published numbers for the cam don't match what I found when I set it up I am happy with the performance . I have a 836 with Kibblewhite valves (std),guides ,and springs and mild porting . Many swear by Megacycle around here though .
Hope this helps.
