Try Beating this...
« on: November 27, 2009, 07:45:21 PM »
I was reading an old issue of RIDER today..1985

They had a guy in there, that had a documented 4 million miles on bikes.. :o

He had been riding 42 years, 28 of those were as a motor officer. He lived in Louisiana..

Geez that would have to be  100K a year :o, for his cop years to do 2.8 million.. Makes a few truckers  look bad..

.. I feel so inadequate... >:( :(

4M miles @ 60 MPH= 66,667 hours of riding, divided by the 2080 typical hours worked in a year=32.05 years of nothing but riding every minute of every working day?  Rain or shine?
I don't know...  :-\  "plausible" (?) as the myth busters would say.

I am having a bit of trouble with that figure myself,

I will re read that tommorow and make sure it is not an April issue.

One thing about being a cop, is you may be able to run at 75 a lot of the day, but even 6 hrs driving would be a lot.

The latest he could have became a cop was around 57, good thing they came out with swingarm frames the next year.. I know from working in the 70s, that 6 days a week, and more than 8 hr days was common..

That's true, not to mention the "personal" time spent on a bike and not on the clock.

.. and quite impossible. Motor Officers (or any other LEO) do not spend their entire shift - every day - all day - riding around non-stop. Answering calls, making traffic stops, eating lunch, meetings, etc.

Well I got a name, and read more of the story

It was not an April issue.

Name is Lina Veillon, a Cajun. Got his first bike at 13 yrs old , always ride Harley, ride tear round.. 100K most years..

Never took vacations, said it cost him too much, as he was NOT GETTING PAID to do what he enjoyed!

Escorted 2 American presidents, Eisenhower and I think Kennedy.. Wonder if he hung around with Hugh Long .. :o

Got to represent the USA over in France, they shipped 2 HD police bikes over there to give Demos.

 and more..

So he's averaging 250+ miles a day/every day? I still say not possible for his 'on duty' days. There's more things involved in working as a Motor Officer than just riding around, racking up miles.

I will try to drag the mag here and hand type the story in a few days.
Basically he did get paid to ride around,
They got one bike per man, no one else used it, when his was being serviced he would use his own.

The only info I gleaned online was (think its him) died in May 89, was buried in Allen parish LA. since that is mostly pre internet , will be harder to find info.
It did say it was all backed by service records from the dealers, for his work and personal bikes.

Rider is a pretty serious mag.. that was in the july 85 issue, I sure it was dicussed a bit by letter in ther around 3 months following.. Anybody know someome that has most RIDER  issues from back then?

Now not to say he is lying but maybe more info is needed. How did he come up with these numbers? A guesstimate? Or did he record every single mile he ran? I mean he could have rode a lot but his estimate could be off, maybe even way off. He could have been doing a lot of averaging. Like I said, I do not doubt he has a lot of miles but it easily could be much less.

Being with the PD, I am pretty sure there would be service/mileage records.
Police Special speedos, are deemed to be high accuracy..

Yeah, it is hard to believe, I am looking into it further..
